Hi there folks!
I have owned my Standard Balladeer for over 20 yrs and I play a lot of the time sitting.
I hate the way it keeps trying to slip down my leg so I have to rest the palm of my right hand
on the top and try to strum at the same time. Very frustrating!
One day I was playing and and I thought I should try putting something on my leg to keep
my guitar from slipping so I tried rubber shelf liner (or the material used to keep rugs from slipping on floors). I cut a piece about 20 inches long and
put it between my guitar and my leg and wow what a difference!
When I go to guitar parties people can't believe the difference.
Give it a try!

Makes me wonder if I had a deep bowl Ovation I would probably do that.

I always used to be standing when I played my Ovation but now because of 'dodgy back' problems I have to sit down. But I found I had to then use a strap to stop my guitar from sliding down my thigh. Then I hit on a brilliant idea, I cut pieces of Velcro (the hook one) and stuck them on the belly of the guitar just where it touched my knee. Brilliant job until I was sitting in the sun and the contact glue went all soft and my pieces of Velcro stayed on my trousers and the guitar slid down my thigh again. I just managed to pack in before the glue messed up my trousers. So now thanks to you Sturmmer I might have the cure.. Thanks mate.. S

You are welcome slowpoke. I have tried all kinds of things over the years. I even tried a variation of your Velcro idea except I wrapped a loop of Velcro around my leg and a piece stuck on the guitar. It didn't work worth a crap. I guess to try something like that shows how desperate I was to fix the problem. LOL! Let me know how it works for you.

I have put in my order for the wife to pick up some of that rubberized material next time she visits a store that sells it. But I was warned not to touch a roll she has in a cupboard because that was just enough for lining some drawers in the kitchen.

In fact I used my Ovation and my piece of non-slip material only the other day at a gig I did for an old folks home and it was perfect so I used it again on Saturday for busking and once again it was perfect. My guitar strap didn't look too happy being ignored for two gigs, but it'll get used to it.. S
PS. Mine is a nice shade of Battleship Grey..

Old thread, but this may help someone.

One thing I've used on my Ovation is some anti-slip tape that you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's. It's made to put down on steps to prevent slipping, but it works great on Ovation guitars. And it removes without leaving sticky residue or removing guitar finish. Also, it isn't very expensive.

So if you are one of those 1,000 people in the entire world who still like Ovations (as I am), this may help you prevent your guitar from slip-sliding away.

I can usually figure out by looking how accessories are supposed to work - but for the life of me I don't see how that thingy is supposed to work. At least traction tape and drawer liner rubberized stuff I understand...…

Well, ladyssolo, the claim is that it provides the top of the guitar with an almost square-back profile (like a regular guitar). I can see how this might be helpful when standing, when the guitar is right against your chest. But sitting? That, to me, is another matter. When sitting, I am slightly hunched over my guitar, all of them. They are not right up against my chest. That's when I find the traction tape helpful.

On the other hand, traction tape does nothing for me when standing with the guitar. But I don't find that my Ovation tries to get away from me standing anyway, just when sitting.

trek4fr, I agree, when standing my strap provides all I need to stay put. When sitting, I don't have too much trouble with my guitars, my bowlback mandolins are another matter and I find the rubberized shelf liner a big help. So I bought a roll of it a Lowe's for about $6.00, I have enough to last a lifetime. So if I ever have a guitar that tries to get away, I am set!

I've used this stuff for a variety of things. While pretty good, I think I'd go the solid mat route of rubber or silicon if I were trying to hold a guitar being played in place because while these dollar store things are pretty nice, they tend to start falling apart or just rip apart pretty easily when put under any kind of stress, tugging, pulling etc.

That may be true with the rubbery stuff, TonyKgull, everything from the shelf liner to tool box liner to adhesive foam of some type. The traction tape, though, is quite unlikely to fall apart. But if you use it, don't play your guitar naked. It will leave some really bad chafing. Ha ha!
