So I nearly pulled the trigger on this budget beauty. The rosewood one.

It was NZ300 and basically an unplayed pre-owned model. It sounded really good. Very crisp. BUT there was a big chip in the bridge plate near the 5th bridge pin that I wasnt happy about. Also, that 1.72 nut width thing just came into play again, and I really struggled with chording. I just gotta go 1.75 or higher. Unfortunately need to be very frugal at the moment, so even the Alvarez may be out. They are quite pricey here.

I have always rated Washburns and Yamahas as my go-to budget bangers!

I like Washburn Guitars, had a couple somewhere in the past, but for some reason not seen a new Washburn Guitar for sale for more than a few years.

Hi Derick, still waiting for the family as visas still pending. We have a saying in SA - "Africa is not for sissies". I would add that neither is immigration! Hopefully the powers that be will come through soon.

I went to the NZ Rockshop in Napier, and played the Maple version of the AG20ce. It was also very nice. I preferred the highs of the maple compared to the rosewood. But the maple lacked bass, as expected. If i went Maple, I would go Jumbo size.

They had a very nice budget Takamine dread as well. All laminate spruce/mahogany. Just set up very well and sounded good for a cheap guitar. Reddish finish. I liked the look an sound of it. Considering it as an option.

I really want to get my hands on an Alvarez AJ80ce, as its a relatively inexpensive guitar for what you get. I might actually buy this Takamine, and then sell it later to purchase the Alvarez, which is double the price. So many options!!!

Don't forget, the chase for a new guitar is more than half the fun.

Today called in the guitar shop, and played a Lag orchestra size Guitar, with solid Cedar top, very nice Guitar, played and sounded great, for not a lot of money, £230.
But do I need another guitar, no, but just maybe I want one. 😀

This surprises me. You turned down the Washburn because of the thin nut width (or at least in part due to that). I haven't tried any Takamines in a while, but if they're still the same as they used to be, the nut width on the Tak will probably be a wee bit thinner than the Washburn (if the Washburn had a true 1.72" nut) cuz Tak likes to put 1.69" nut widths on most of their guitars.

If you had trouble chording on the Washburn, it's gonna get worse with the Tak. Just sayin'.

Good luck in your search Bro and remember, patience......it's worth it to go without a little longer and save to get the quality item you need or want. Trust me, I know.

TonyKgull, you know, you are quite right. But this Tak really did play well, and it sounded amazing.

I just googled it, and it looks like a discontinued model that is actually all laminated Mahogany, with a red spray job. I played three others (a natural, a sunburst, and a black) which were all in the same line. All dreads, no pickups. But I just googled these ones, and they all have spruce tops. The red one is the only one which is all laminated mahogany.

So once again, the Mahogany guitars are just speaking to me!

The guy offered me a really nice Tak 12-string with a pickup, as well as a 3/4 guitar for my kids. For $700. It was tempting, but I just was not sure.

I'm going to Music Planet Palmerston North this weekend to check out what they have in terms of Alvarez on a budget. But I'm keen on something that doesnt break the bank that can live in the lounge and tha I dont need to worry about. The Sigma I had was meant to do that, but it didnt race my motor.
