I am the proud owner of my first parlour!
As some might have known, I was looking for a 2nd acoustic. One that would be a leave out, kiddie friendly, songwriting budget guitar that sounded great. I settled on a Cort dread, which had great tone but not great feel. And so after a week I returned it. I played a whole lot of guitars for over an hour to choose a replacement, and was making up my mind on either a Cort GA cedar top, or a Cort 000 12-fretter. I was not planning on the 12-fret but it sounded great .
Then the unexpected happened. The GA had been sold, and I was "forced" into the Cort 000 12-fret. Also, over the weekend, I had been doing some strengthening and dexterity exercises with the left hand. Well, the Alvarez AP70e parlour which I had overlooked on the first attempt caught my eye. Since the only guitar I liked was now a 12 fretter, I thought I may as well give the Alvarez parlour more air time. I played it and I liked the feel this time. I think the hand exercises helped a lot and I played better today. It was quite resonant and the sustain was great. I was impressed. And that dark rosewood seduced me like a fine Cape Town Pinotage.
I was about to return to the Cort, but I decided to put down the pick and let the fingers do the walking on the Alvarez for just a few seconds. All of a sudden, the neck felt GREAT!!! And the bass response when using my thumb sounded incredible. Much more bold than I anticipated. The magic was building. I kept playing, but something else was amiss - I checked the tuning. Both E's were slightly out, and the G string was quite a bit out. I tweaked it and started with a little fingerstyle up the neck - Oh my word!!! I was not looking for a Parlour guitar at all when I walked into the shop today. But this little thing started to rock my world at one little twist of a Wilkinson open-gear tuner on that pretty little slot head. I was sold
The guy in the shop could see I was loving it. He offered it to me at a discounted rate and gave me half price on a hard case. It was twice the price of the Cort, but I didnt hesitate. I think i may have bought this guitar at full price.
So I am super chuffed this evening. I went in to buy a cheap bright budget stage guitar that I could use at camp functions and leave lying around the house etc. What I ended up with was an awesome little couch picker that I can also use to teach my kids. And I figure you can write songs on any guitar. Its also so nice to just chill on the couch with this baby. So comfy. And loud as well! This thing just makes me wanna chill out and play!
