My 2018 New Year's Resolutions were:
Cut way back on buying guitars. FAILED!!!!!
Sell some guitars. FAILED!!!!
Work on the one's I have. Did OK.
Learn to play something. FAILED!!!!
So I did REALLY poor last year. What are my 2019 New Year's Resolutions???
I'd say all the same one's from last year, and add:
"Sell more vintage Yamaha guitar parts & services." Last year I did my first PAID neck reset, and I sold a few bone nuts & saddles. This will help pay for more guitars and tools. Last year I bought a Harbor Freight mini milling machine and tooling, and a 1976 Craftsman 6" x 48" belt sander (which I tore apart and completely rebuilt). This year I would like to buy a small 3D printer to prints tools and fixtures for working on guitars. Maybe a small lathe, but that's pushing it.
Learn more advanced repair/rebuild techniques. Maybe more severely broken guitars. One thing I want to do is convert ladder braced vintage Harmony guitars to X braced. This is a crazy way advanced thing to do. It involves removing the back and replacing ALL the internal bracing. I have a minty and a beat up Harmony Sovereign H1260. The miny one needs a neck reset. The beat up one needs lots of work (cracks & neck reset) and would be a good candidate for conversion, although I should probably practice on a couple of cheaper models first. BUT!!! I need to sell some guitars to make room for MORE guitars!!!
One thing I should have included last years was to continue to learn and share more about vintage Yamaha FG acoustic guitars. When I think I've learned all I can about them I continue to discover more variations. Please don't let me go down the rabbit hole of Harmony guitars!!!! At least that would be easier, since they were made in the US. Yamaha history is lost in the language barrier.
