His parents bought it new for him new in 1977. He played the snot out of it for years but it's been sitting in its case for the past 18 years after life had gotten in the way of his hobbies. He pulled it out of it's forced exile last week with every intention of playing again and it appears the neck height is much higher than it was back when he played it regularly.
He read my instructions for resetting neck height on a classic FG series Yamaha but, even though he had worked as a communications technician for 20 years (in a previous career) and was skilled enough to fix his Roland XP80 keyboard workstation when it died last year, he cannot see himself trying this complex repair on his beloved guitar (for fear of destroying it).
We talked a bit over the last few days and he sent lots of pictures. With the strings at 3/16" over the last fret it's definitely time for a neck reset. And there are some divots in the first few frets.
While he knows paying someone to perform a neck reset on his baby costs more than the guitar is worth, this guitar has sentimental value to him that makes it priceless.
So yesterday he bought a new hard case for it and send it in my direction from Spokane, WA to CT. FEDEX says it should arrive next Friday.
I'm going to have to work on cleaning up my workspace to be ready to start work on it.
I estimated about 8 weeks to get it done. The company he works for is headquartered in Cambridge, MA. And he has relatives in New Hampshire. So a trip out to the east coast is probably in his future.
I can't wait to get started next weekend! I'm honored to have the chance to bring his cherished guitar back to life!!
There's a possibility of having 2 more neck resets coming in the next month. And build the YamaBass. Should be interesting.
