That's the best I can do.

Garland , I try not to use the word "cover" in that way. In the fifties and sixties the word cover meant copying the original note for note, including mistakes (K-tel records). It was not applied to people doing their own version of someone else's song. 
Frank Sinatra sang his own unique version of Paul Anka's song My Way and people didn't call it a cover.  Elvis sang his own version of Big Mama Thorton's Hound Dog and people didn't call it a cover.
They didn't say that Otis Redding was covering Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly, and Harry M. Woods' 1932 song Try A Little Tenderness.
These days, anyone who sings a song they didn't write gets called a cover, even if it's very different from anyone else's.  It has become a pejorative term these days, so I avoid it.
