Question re heel pin install on Seagull Folk

4 of my guitars have heel block buttons. Back in the day I had one installed on my S6, bottom of heel.
My Amber Trails MJ has one factory installed in upper bout. My Alvarez baritone has a factory installed one in bottom of heel. The Ibanez is weird, the button is installed on bottom SIDE of heel block.

I find, in most cases that the two buttons are too close together to make for a comfortable strap.. Feels claustrophobic. and I am skinny! I prefer straps, when I use one, on headstock. That is how my Coastline 12 is strapped. The Baritone, on the occasions I put a strap on it is also headstock strapped.



I either use a neckstrap attachment as above on the Coastline or a thick shoelace as on my Gretsch resonator and my Alvarez baritone to tie strap to headstock. I don't use straps on any other acoustic guitar. My other guitars are light enough to make straps an impediment for me.




For a folk or any classical size guitar, you might want to consider a classical strap. Much cheaper and no mods to guitar.

I'm not a guitar strap lover or user much.  I prefer to sit when playing acoustic.  Probably because I'm not just playing it, I'm usually always singing as well.

Anyways, I've tried both ways and I'm not a fan of the strap being on the headstock in any way.  I've found, for me anyways, it makes the guitar seem to have a stronger "pulling" effect on my neck.  When the strap is totally on the body, it doesn't seem to have that same effect.  That pulling effect can get very fatiguing, very fast.

2 guys in my praise band told me the same thing.  Tried the neck thing for lack of a proper strap pin on the body for awhile, but then quickly got that fixed and went with strap on body only.  They said it made a world of difference as well.  The neck is ok for a one-off or a short gig in a pinch, but if you're going to be using it all the time, one might find it gets quite uncomfortable.

Just my 2 cents, but I would always vote for the strap being on both sides of the body rather than the body and the neck.  YMMV however.

CaliGull ,TonyKgull ,RobertW ,Stud Muffin , the old strap subject... I thought I was the only one who tied straps to head stocks, but I now prefer the heel button. The pulling Tony describes is also true - I think it comes from movement. When the player moves, the strap moves the neck. I've had the neck pull right out of my hand before.... this doesn't happen with the heel button. I'm always playing standing - but perhaps when I get my small body guitar, I'll do some couch noodling or some such.

CaliGull , looking at the .pdf, as you say both diagrams are the same. In the text however it is stated that a shortened heel guitar is 1/2" shorter, and so the shown 2 3/16" needs to be shortened by 1/2" to 1 11/16".
The instruction also shows the installation position right on the centerline of the heel. On my Taylor, the heel button is rotated about 30 degrees off the centerline of the heel toward the bottom side (bottom side when standing). The result is an installation in which there is friction as the strap end is drawn around the heel helping hold the guitar, rather than all forces being placed on the button screw in shear. I don't see anything on the instruction that would prevent the rotated installation. Not sure how much difference that makes....
But I also then thought that Seagull had moved at some point to glued on necks. With a glued on neck, there would be no internal bolts to miss. So long as the screw was kept to 1" length, the location of the button would not be restricted so much. You just wouldn't want the screw to bridge the glue joint. And that might not matter much - in the case of a neck reset, simply remove the button before removing the neck.

They moved to epoxied necks years ago, but the bolts are still there.  They don't serve the same purpose as a true "bolt on" neck though.  They are there to hold the neck until the epoxy properly sets, then the bolts are just left in there.  So, ya, epoxied necks, but the bolts are still there.
