Yamaha FG Serial Numbers, Interior Markings, and Labels

YAMAHA on the top means it was an exported model.  The models they kept in Japan have the 3 tuning fork logo on the top.

This is a very common model.  They have a boxy/bluesy sound.  It is very heavily built, with fan type bracing more like a classical guitar, not X braced as the redesigned Black label FG-75-1 has.  It was made 1968 to 1974.  All plywood, as most FG's are.  Spruce top, agathis back & sides, nato neck, Indian rosewood fingerboard & bridge.  It listed for $109.50 and probably sold for $75/$85.  Because it is very common it is not worth much, other than the hype of the Nippon Gakki Red label.  The value varies on condition and playability.  Maybe $200 for mint condition and playable, to worthless if it's beat up and unplayable.  90+% of vintage FG's have high action and need a neck reset.  This is caused by decades of string tension pulling the neck up, basically trying to collapse the guitar in half.  You can sometimes sand the bridge lower to be able to lower the saddle, but to properly fix it later it now needs a new bridge.

Your guitar was made in Taiwan 5/22/1972. 

That's cool that you still have it after 45 years.  The old FG's are great guitars.

I  know very little about the Dynamic series, other than what little records I've found says they were made from about 1961 to 1967, depending on the model.  Some where steel string, some where nylon string.  What they were made from is incomplete.  Without the label you'll probably never know what it is.  I'd guess it was made in the early 60's.  That's all I've got.

I have my Dad's Yamaha that my mother bought him back in the late 60's or early 70's. I do not know for sure if it was new when purchased. I always thought it was. The guitar is a red label FG-180. The only serial number I see in it is 958950. And hand written in it is 1-1966.
I have photos of the label, serial number and the hand written numbers. Being new to the site, I don't know how to post the pics I have on here. If anyone can shine some light on information about my dad's guitar, I would greatly appreciate it.

If your still collecting them I have a FG 110 46.2.2  1513504.It has the common red Nippon Gaki label with Yamaha on top of headstock. It has the small dots on the neck. Its a closet queen with low action and not a mark on it. 

You are correct, but the date code is when the sides were made, the guitars were typically finished 3 to 6 weeks later. So I'd say your guitar was built March 1971.

I already have this guitar in my list from before you bought it on ShopGoodwill. It's a beauty!!
