terryd , so far as the sound of the 300 series...... my main source of information is a friend's older 300 series 12 string. The body of the guitar is slightly larger than my 418. I think it was made 20+ years back. The guitar has a great sound, with a lot of volume and sustain. It compares quite favorably to spruce/mahogany tonewood combos. Between this guitar and an LTD (spruce/quilted sapele) I was playing in the shop in town, I have developed quite a healthy respect for the tonewood properties of sapele. The larger body will of course be different from a GA, but sapele can hold its own very well when compared with mahogany.
So far as the x14 compared to x16, my only reference is an afternoon I spent A/Bing an 814 and 816. Compared to the x18 (I had been playing my 418 steadily for 9 months leading up to that day) they were similar enough that the feel between the two was almost the same.
