We sure do worry an awful lot about humidity and our guitars.
Wooden acoustic guitars have been around for a long, long time ... Heck, Martin started making them for us in this country in 1833 ...
Meanwhile, having any reasonable amount of control over the humidity level in the environment around us only became feasible in the last 50-60 years.
Some of the most coveted guitars in the world today were produced, owned, and played extensively when nobody gave much of a thought to the humidity one way or another.
How in the world did our great-grandfathers own and play a wooden acoustic guitar and not have it self-destruct back in the day when the ambient humidity was what you had to deal with, like it or not?
What did people in Nazereth, PA do in those 19th century winters when their newly acquired Martins were jeopardized? What did that early bluesman in Hattisburg, Mississippi do in August?
Now don't get me wrong. This post is partly tounge-in-cheek. But, it's also a serious question.
I fully realize that the Iraqi desert and the Amazon rainforest will do a guitar no good at all. But, other than extreme conditions aren't we getting a bit anal today when we start wringing our hands about the humidity level dropping to 35% in our music room?
