There were Beamers in the parking lot, too -- this is part of town near where Peter Frampton lived when he was here in town (nice guy, BTW -- I helped him a few times when he stopped into the Apple Store where I was working at the time). As to proximity, Hi Tech Rich Guy was about four or five feet to the side of me, leaning against the bar, and yeah, he had a smartphone too. :-)

Speaking of BMWs.  What's with those things anyways??? 

Do they not come with the option of signal stalks???  And do the people who buy them have to take a course in "How to maximize being a jerk to others on the road in your new beemer" before they're allowed to take possession of it?  

I drive for a living and I despise those cars more than anything.  If I was givin a new one for free I'd sell it immediately just cuz I'd never want to be associated with "those" kind of people.  LOL.    They seem to be universally despised in my neck of the woods by everybody except those who own one.

Perfect example:  I know one guy who owns one.  It's one of the mid sized sedan models ending with a 5.  He loves them.  His has a massive, large scrape/gouge down the passengers side from the front to rear fenders.  Why?  Cuz he was trying to be Mario Adretti (not sure how you spell that driver's name) in an intersection and hit another car, side swipped him actually.  He told me how it happened, clearly his fault, but "he" is convinced he did nothing wrong and that it was the other guys fault, who, by my associate's own description, was doing nothing wrong!  LOL.  Yeeesh.   BMW drivers are the worst. 

He hasn't had it fixed because despite his claims he did nothing wrong, he won't report it to the Ins Co. cuz he knows that really, he did.  .....That's just one example, I know many more.  LOL.

TonyKgull , I find it seems to be a prerequisite to drive almost any German car. You see same behavior with Volkswagen and Mercedes drivers also. Their Salesmen also...
Apparently, they also think that since their car is expensive, handicapped parking is reserved for them...sometimes two spaces. And of course they can wait for their passenger idleing on the handicapped ramp at the grocery store. Every day...

I thinks it's because one no longer need to be rich to buy one, just have to make the rental, high school dropouts are behind the wheel. It seems obvious the boorish behavior is due to poor education

Of course, we frugal Hyundai drivers are angels of the road...

My first two cars were German cars. I really miss them.
My first was a '61 Karmann Ghia. It cost me $200 and taught me that I have to make sure to change the oil regularly.
My second was a '61 VW Beetle, also $200. The engine eventually went into a dune buggy (not mine).

Denise's (my wife's) first car was a '60 Karmann Ghia.  My first car was (like your second car) also a '61 Beetle. One of my more embarrassing moments as a teenager was when I walked into the car parts section of the local VW dealer and asked for an oil filter for the car. The guy behind the counter smothered his laugh and said "Uh, young man, the '61 Beetle doesn't -have- an oil filter. There a screen you need to clean when you change your oil."

Oops.

I would go on to own a couple more Beetles, and eventually a few Jettas. I still like VWs, though our current cars are a 2014 Prius and a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica (aka: the Band Equipment Car).
