I think Seagull really dropped the ball on 3 things.
1) Changing the logo. Even millennials will grow up "some day" ( ha ha! maybe!) and will appreciate class and the brand as it was was gaining traction and reputation.
2) Getting rid of the bolt on neck for the epoxied neck. Never thought that was a good idea.
3) Cheapening stuff on the guitar to keep the price "sort of" the same. To point #1 again, they were gaining traction and reputation and everybody knows costs are going up for everybody. If they just raised the price of the guitars but kept making fantastic high end models (specifically in the Maritime and Artist series, but even with the Performer and Coastline as well) I think they could have kept digging into the market and establishing themselves even better with Martin and Taylor for all levels of guitars. They were already outselling both of them combined years ago before they changed the logo.
I could be completely wrong on this of course; this is just my opinion and as everyone knows, everyone is entitled to my opinion!
2) I understand why those who do repairs on guitars hate the epoxied neck, and I'd prefer that it was a bolt-on neck so if a problem does crop up, it's an 'easier' repair. But hey, if an epoxied neck is stable for a couple decades, at my age that's not going to be a problem...
3) Here, I agree completely. The new Artist series now looks, well, more like Seagull's less expensive lines. Far better would have been to keep the Artist series distinctively classy, even if it meant bumping up the price. I think most guitarists are aware that the cost of the tonewoods is going up as they become scarcer and more prone to regulations, and would understand a modest price increase (say, $100 - 200) in order to get a guitar that sounds and looks like it's worth more than the lower-cost lines. I mean, c'mon, a black-painted Artist? That just screams "We wanted to use our second-class wood, so we're covering up the cosmetic issues with paint so no one notices."
OTOH, I think anyone with an older Artist, Maritime, etc. should feel like their guitar's now worth more... All I can do is shake my head at some of Godin's recent business choices.
