Yesterday we drove 2 hours out to Long Island NY to visit our daughters internet friend and her mother. We met at a HUGE mall. Of course, I Googled to see what music stores were in the area. I found Guitar Center is across the street and Sam Ash is a few blocks down the street.
We got there 50 minutes early so we went to Guitar Center first. I've been to all the Guitar Centers in CT and they all have one thing in common. All the guitars have months old, been played by thousands of people, grimmy strings!!! This place was no different. Some were so bad I couldn't slide my fingers on the strings, they stuck. Put that one right down! Another unfortunate thing is the ventilation system in the room was kind of loud, like having the fan in your car on medium. You couldn't hear any other the subtleties of the guitar. That and the old string made many of them sound the same. It was a lousy place to audition a guitar.
Which is a shame, because they has the biggest selection of Martin acoustics I've ever seen at a GC. The only thing they were missing was anything from the D4x series. They had the usual made for GC dread MMV, but they also had the rare 000 version! They also had 2 of the 00028EC that I've always wanted to hear. And other favorites HD28 and the awesome HD28V! And the standards D18, D28 and D35. And some of the newer models with too many characters to remember. I also played the Taylor 814CE & 914CE. And others I can't remember. It was awesome and sucked at the same time. So many great guitars but I couldn't hear much of a difference, except for the bass.
I almost forgot to mention. They had a few Seagulls. A few Entorage models in various sizes, a couple of S6's, and 2 or 3 Maritime models. Not bad.
We went to Sam Ash later but quickly left. They had lots of Taylor's but nothing else interesting. I had hoped to find some rare old Yamaha but came up empty.
