Derick,
True enough. Reading over in the carbon fiber forum at AGF, and my own experiences so far, I think that McPherson is about the best available right now. It is interesting that, with the exception of a few Chinese outliers, all the carbon fiber guitars seem to cluster around the same price point.
I have yet to hear of anybody reporting quality problems with a McPherson. Right now, there is quite a discussion about quality issues with Emerald. Emerald only sells factory direct from Ireland, so there is no way to try before you buy. People are reporting having buzzing issues, blemishes, and various problems. It isn't everybody, but it does seem a significant number at AGF. Yet, they are all rooting for the company and seem willing to live with these issues.
That surprises me because a $3,000 guitar ought to be letter perfect. It would bother me to no end to spend that kind of money on a guitar, knowing that I could be a decent wood guitar at a much lower cost that does not have such issues. Or, I could buy a McPherson for the same money and not have those issues.
Rainsong seems to make a nice guitar, but I can't stand the shape of their necks. That seems to be an issue for many over at AGF too. Then, there is Blackbird, and they seem to have quality issues. The neck on a McPherson plays very much like a Taylor, who have a solid reputation for being very playable guitars right out of the box.
For those who live in an area whose environment is kind to wood guitars, wood is a fine way to go. For those of us who live in areas where humidity (too much or too little) is an issue, carbon fiber is a reasonable alternative these days.
To me, a beautiful wood guitar is a work of art, and a fine carbon fiber guitar is a work of fine engineering.
Tony
