This is an observation and not based on technical data. Recently bought a new stand alone air conditioner for the bedroom, 13,500 btu's, and it cools the room much better than the window unit. However, whereas the humidity used to stay around 50% with the dehumidifier only coming on intermittently, it now gets up into the low 80% range and stays on causing the 2 units to compete. Decided that the high humidity feels comfortable to me, as long as its cool. My various visitors don't seem to like it..complaining about a sawdust smell, trouble breathing, etc. Also, when I take a guitar out the strings are usually from a half to a whole note sharp. I sleep like a baby and feel great with the high humidity so going to ride it out a bit longer. Btw, the four guitars in the room are all layered, plywood guitars. I wouldn't even consider putting an all wood guitar in there. It has even occurred to me to get a carbon fiber guitar.
ancient1, I use a stand-alone or portable A/C unit in my apartment as well. Mine is only 10,000 btu though.
Anyways, one thing I had to make sure of is that the vent hose was put in the window in a good way. Meaning, I made a custom acrylic window with a perfect "fit" hole for the hose to clip into with no, or very little room for air gaps. So, almost a perfect seal.
This is important to accomplish somehow, because the portable A/Cs work as a dual unit: an A/C unit and a dehumidifier. That hose does not only vent the hot air, it vents moisture too. Not all of it, but a good amount. The rest drips out as you probably know.
The water that drips out needs to be dumped frequently or you end up humidifying the room just by all that water sitting in various basins and evaporating.
Don't know if this is possible in your situation, but that's what I do to avoid that.
Frankly, I've found in my own tests with this apartment that a window unit cools it way better and more efficiently than these portable stand-alone units. A 5,000 btu window A/C unit can cool my apartment as good as a 10,000 btu portable unit. Something else to consider when using these things.
I can't use window units for insanely stupid reasons I won't go into, but I wish I could go back to the days when I could.
===================================== One Alvarez in the hand is worth two Taylors and a Martin in the guitar store!
I don't like visitors- if they choose to visit the first thing they should understand is it's my residence, my rules. I'll accommodate as best I can, but, I stays here all the time- they don't. I have my thermostat (central a/c and heat) set at 77 for a/c in the summer time. My kids say they're hot when they come over I say tough, I'm comfortable.
No visitors. Even with a mask, sorry. Inviting someone into your home during this pandemic is not sane.
I am watching the helicopter parents bringing their kids to school this week. There will be a huge spike in case in about 12 days. Interestingly the English schools opened a week before the French schools, I guess we are the Guinea Pigs.
sorry for the rant
I still fighting the humidity here. I turned down the Cooling cut-in temp to 76 so it would run, but not running enough. 57% In computer room, 62% in guitar room..grr
notice Derick ,i used F indoors and C outdoors. Being Canadian, gotta be nice to both, sorry.
