I have these Sony SRS-A202 PC self powered speakers.Got them on sale at Best Buy or one of those countless places. They sound ok unless any song that has much bass (you tube videos) cause them to distort. They have one speaker each 2 1/8" and the plastic housing has a rectangular port in the rear and they title the speaker without the power button and volume control Mega Bass.
Really only use them when my wife and I listen to Videos for the music. I have an old Panasonic dual cassette boom box that has a line in for a CD deck and tried that on my old Acer desktop and it sounded far better in all respects. That PC has controls for adding quite a few speakers the Dell 780 desk top or rather both are towers, only has a rear speaker out and an input and the same on the front panel where I use the ear buds. I never compared the actual specs on either sound card just know they have about the same output based on volume level same Sony speakers. I don't need more than two speakers so the Acer only had the control like a equalizer type thing you could set or use the choice of rock and pop so one which was basically presets for the so called equalizer and you could leave the ear phones connected front and just turn on the speakers. The Dell you have to unplug the ear phones front in order for the speakers to work , just their design , though that jack was broke until I figured it out. I got the Dell because win XP would not do Netflix any more.
Now that all that is out of the way, tech boring stuff and I know little about sound cards. The Dell is more of an office machine the Acer had a similar title. The sound cards as far as I know are built into the mother board?
I do have two sets of book self speakers. KLH brand from 2003 got a gift card at the 10 year mark working at a Ford dealership needed speakers for the rear on my car which only had a speaker in the center top of the dash and the radio was a VW dealer add on box under the dash, long story.
One set is a three way 8 ohm 4 1/2" woofer and the other a two was 6 1/2" woofer. There are these cheap $30 stereo amps Kinter and another brand who made these first. Have a treb /bass Volume work off a wall wart 12 volt 3 amp DC . I got one haven't connected it yet not sure ya see amazon reviews , good bad , ugly plus wasted a few hours of my life on you tube with tech type fellows reviews also good bad so so maybe.
I don't want to use the boom box because we get so much dust in here , these small things look like they are able to deal with dust.
That's what I have , any advice? I can live with the Sony guys yet would be nice to have a better sound. Seems like people use these little (digital audio amps 2 channel 20 watt) for PC's and cars and boats and garage sound back porches and the like. And yes made in China like the speakers I mentioned and I would say the PC's and monitor and Sony speakers. Some people use these for their flat screens TV for better sound . These amps are really small , the case is aluminum , knobs plastic 4 3/4" W 3 1/2" deep 1 3/4" tall body .
I've built tube powered guitar amps yet when it comes to solid state don't know much other than I would not built a guitar stomp box or attempt to repair anything solid state. I breaks in the trash in goes. Oh here's a link to one same thing different brand .
