blues90 , Sounds similar to me. I haven't had to check action for a long time. I only check if some sort of "issue" arises.
But I found some notes for the last time I was checking action on a older Seagull I was having problems with and apparently, I like it around 5/64's "ish". lol. I'm a fairly aggressive player, but at the same time, I like low-but-not-too-low action. I say "ish" because it really does seem to depend on the guitar.
Some guitars will buzz with the same action as others that don't. Some will feel uncomfortable for me with the same action height as another that doesn't.
You're right, it's all about how the guitar is built, the woods and other variables. It can sometimes be a real headache, depending on the guitar, getting the action to one's own "sweet spot."
