If I can, I'm going to put this in my sig line

I've had a dell inspiron for over 4 years and the speakers are on the side. Never could ever hear it very good at all. Always run it through an interface, then to 80 watt monitors and it's louder than I need.
Phone and laptop speakers have a lot of room for improvement.

Garland,  BTW, I mentioned this in another thread too, but even a fairly cheap bluetooth speaker can make a world of difference.

I have a nice Bose bluetooth speaker (free from my wife's work!    ) and it makes my now 5-year-old laptop sound like a million bucks.  But the speakers on my laptop are SO pathetic that even some of the cheapest bluetooth speakers out there would be a huge improvement.

You can also get cheap plug-in speakers too, but now things start to get kinda awkward and permanent.  Bluetooth is the way to go for portability.

ancient1, TonyKgull, blues90, I will get something else- even the blue tooth speaker I have sucks-it's a Tidbit and had good reviews- I will go to Best Buy so I can actually hear them next time- maybe even plug ins as suggested- I need a new hat first though LOL- as in tomorrow!

TonyKgull, ancient1, blues90, I got a set of logitech speakers today- they sound exactly like the lap top speakers- so, they reproduce the sound they receive is my guess- I called Dell and told them what I thought about the educated beyond their intellect genius(es) that designed and signed off on muffled speakers on the bottom of a lap top and told the CS agent? to please have one of the empty suits call me- I want to hear his/their/its justification-

My youngest son said they do that so they reverberate the sound from where it's settin- I said, Rich! lap..... top- what does it reverberate off of? pants? legs? dress, skirt?

I changed a setting from "enhanced audio" (allegedly set to spatial)and it helped a little- as in not very much-

ancient1 , TonyKgull , blues90 , last night, I streamed a race on my other lap top (ASUS) and since it was already up and runnin, I plugged in the logitech speakers .... they sounded the same way- muffled. The ASUS does have some adjustments the Dell doesn't have in "advanced settings" though and it didn't help much.

So, I did the hdmi cable from the Dell for you tube, and voila- going through the cheap (insignia brand) sound bar that is hooked to my TV the sound improved a bunch as in near perfect for me ears- so, my conclusion; the lap top speakers (and realtek audio) system(s) for newer lap tops sucks-

Just as an FYI, the "insignia" sound bar has three sound level? settings, they call DSP (whatever that means)- Standard, Theater and News- each has a different *clarity*- I prefer the News because it's, well, more clear- the other two add a tone? that muffles the sound- if I could find something like that better sized for a lap top I'd get it if it didn't cost a fortune- the "insignia" when I bought it 3? (closer to 4 likely- CRS is kicking in) or so years ago was 69 bucks- oh, I bought it for the exact same reason I'm experiencing on the lap tops- the speakers are on the bottom and sound muffled and the TV is a Samsung 43 inch "smart TV"- it still comes down to allegedly educated people not being real bright for real peoples requirements- making the simple complicated is an esoteric endeavor- true intellectual endeavor makes the complicated seem simple-
