Man, what has happened to music

I must agree! I saw a group of 7 "boys" called BTS on Good Morning America the other day. It would be difficult to find a more androgynous group of people than this, and the anchors insisted on calling them a BAND!

Does not the term "band" imply that there are musical instruments being played? 🤔

All these "boys" do is gyrate, dance, and lip sync - and they are quite popular! WHY?!?! 😡😢😞

It's because there's a sucker born every minute!     

"Band" is just a word, but to me, there is not a requirement to have instruments in order to be a band. Pentatonix is an acapella band that certainly qualifies.
Also I wouldn't put a minimum or maximum number on the members of a band. Jesse Fuller is the only member in his band. He plays mouth harp, kazoo, 12-string guitar, high hat, fotdella and he sings. He says the advantage to this band is that no one ever shows up late or drunk.
Count Basie's 17 member group also qualified as a band.
My wife is of Scottish heritage and we often watch the massed pipe bands at the conclusion of the Scots Festivals. I've never counted them, but when they're playing together they're a band.
There are no shortage of younger players with tons of talent; kids like Jimmy Bowskill, Molly Tuttle who could knock our socks off.

I recall when I was a kid, listening to people like Oscar Brown Jr, Dave Van Ronk, John Hammond, Mississippi John, Gord Lightfoot, Glen Gould, Charlie Parker, Herb Ellis. . . while some of my contemporaries were digging Fabian, Connie Francis and Pat Boone. There have always been a variety of tastes and genres and those empty suits chasing dollars and exploiting a dumbed down society have been there since the dawn of recorded music, but if you can't find anything you like, you're not looking in the right spot.

blues90, FloridaGull, Jim, TonyKgull, this is one of the subjects that is, well... subjective, it can lead to essays, maybe book length dissertations- there have been many who asked the same question blues90, posited- there have been just as many rebuttals, ergo- subjective- we're all wired differently = our subjectivity- subjective brings about personal preference- I've not seen the particular "band" blues90, is referring to, but it brings to mind the Milly (sp) Vanilly fiasco from years ago- I'll stop now, (in this response) since I can be verbose, i.e., essay, book length disseration can take up a lot of band width, and time and I need to go get Davey some cat food-

The wife and I just went for a leisurely walk around the local park and a peaceful sit down in the sunshine watching the Canadian Geese and Swans, when four or five Asian lads appeared, started playing a mixture of Asian and Rave music on the loudest piece of equipment ever, thought it was quite good.
It's got nothing to do with this post, but thought you may like to know.

Whether the title is Band ,Group fill in the blank. My main point was Music. Musician ,song presentation. The idea of any awards, certainly many are deserved, the song or performance. There are all types of music. Awards in music has not been around very long and in a sense it is a form of competition.

I don't feel a Musician/ songwriter in the true sense main goal in their process is to win an award. Or be inducted into some hall of fame.

What I saw was the opposite on all counts, except competition as in whom could stand out visually. There was one Female who performed an Elton John song that performed it to pay respect not to turn it into it came from outer space.

I'm not really a fan of any musician, I had my influences when I first picked up the guitar. I was 7 when I got my first instrument the B flat Clarinet it was a nice one. it was all ebony even the bell which has the silver ring. It was not my instrument of choice, that was a Cello. I had old 78 glass records when I was a kid and most were symphony music and I could here each instrument and new what they were. The strings were my all time favorite and the Cello has the most mellow and sweetest sound of all. How ever my father was paying and I didn't know what things like that cost. I took lessons , read sheet music and always wondered what that tiny music stand was in the clarinet case. It was the first year of high school when I had to audition for the class band which none had any strings including the school bands I was in in grade school. It was all brass and woodwind and percussion. Up until then I was fine , loved playing along with the choir and the 4 seasons doing all the seasonal music. Then one the female leader in high school forced her mouth piece on my clarinet and said it needed new pads yet I could play. Found out real quick why the little stand . We were to play marching music for the food ball games.

I traded it in for a guitar , finally had strings.

Point is I can listen to most` types of music not march music. If it's a good song it doesn't matter if it's David Bowie , Elton John , Beatles , Stones , birds , Animals or folk , country , or rock and any type. James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac,. As long as they have some thing in a song that reaches me I'm in. There are hundreds I've never heard and don't know the names of the musicians. By far my # 1 is the Blues. I'm flexible. I was never big on Eric Clapton except when he was in Cream or some of his work on acoustic or with other blues players like Winwood who just had enormous talent. Include CCR. CSN&Y , Joni Mitchell.
