Hey everyone! A bit of a long read but would really appreciate the advice
Thanks to the very friendly and helpful community I was able to decide on buying my first ever acoustic guitar last week
As a first ever acoustic guitar owner, I wanted to be sure I was keeping my investment in as good conditions as possible and so I did some research and stumbled upon humidity.
I live in South-East Asia with high humidity all year round and my guitar has a solid cedar top and at first I thought I was keeping it in a good environment until I bought a cheap mini hygrometer (+/- 5%) and placed it in its case for a couple hours. When I came back the readings showed that the humidity was at a consistent 68%. After seeing this I decided to buy a handful of silica gel packets and stuffed them all around my guitar case and leave it overnight. The next morning I checked the hygrometer and there wasn't a change in humidity (perhaps my case is not as air tight).
After this I decided to keep my guitar in its case inside my bedroom closet with silica gel, after a couple hours the humidity is around 61%. With the aircon on the humidity would drop to around 50-55% which is ideal.
My question is, would this be the proper way of controlling humidity in a very humid country? My plan is to keep the guitar in its case in the closet through out the day without aircon and then leave the aircon on during the night (since I normally only use the aircon overnight for sleeping). Although I am a bit paranoid that the daily change of humidity may have a negative affect on the guitar since it will be shifting from 61% to 50% humidity during the day and night. I thought this may be the best way to do it since this is most likely how guitar stores keep their guitars, its not like they keep their aircon on 24/7..
or would it be better to leave it in a room with a consistent humidity all day long even if its around 68%? Or maybe I am over paranoid and over humidity is not as big of an issue in the first place.
Thanks for the replies!
