Love the nostalgia. I'm trying to recall what the first books, I mean "real" books, I ever read were.
When I stretch my old, cobweb filled memory, as far back as I can, I can only remember two book series and I'm not sure which came first. All I remember is that my mom got them for me. They were a few of the Brother's Grimm fairy tale books and the Hardy Boys Mysteries series of books. Loved those mysteries and the weirdness of those fairy tales.
I also remember 2 other books in there as the first real novels I ever read. They came very shortly after, which were Kavik the Wolf Dog and Farley Mowat's iconic Never Cry Wolf. Those two books had impacts on me in a good way that I can't even describe. I believe I was introduced to those in grade school somewhere around grade 3, 4 or 5.
There is a bronze bust of Farley in our library and each year Port Hope has a Farley Mowat day.
John Steinbeck wrote a book about himself and his dog called Travels With Charlie.
Claire Mowat later wrote a book called Travels With Farley.
We lost Farley May 6, 2014. There is a park with Farley's name in Port Hope.
Our friend Washboard Hank owned a huge dog named Farley. Here are Maggie (5' 1") and Farley when we baby sat him for a weekend while Hank was gigging.
