It appears to me, from some of the responses, I may have been slightly misunderstood in my comments about the uke. (Please correct me if I'm wrong).

When I say it's not my cup of tea or that it sounds like a toy, that's precisely all I'm saying. I'm not saying it's not a legitimate instrument or that actual, legitimate musical skills can't be performed on one. Not at all.

All I'm saying is that it's not really my cup of tea to listen to and to me, is does just sound like a toy. That's all.

Having said that, I don't hate them either. I actually own and play one from time to time and so does my wife. I do find them a very nice affordable avenue for a fun, musical change every now and then.

So, ya, for whatever that's worth.

I am a genuine player and owner of the ukulele. lol. Still sounds like a toy to me. How can what something sounds like to a person be offensive? If I drive a tiny, 2-cylinder car, and think it sounds like a lawnmower, am I now offending lawnmower owners? Let's not be silly about it. lol.

My definition of affordable is definitely relative, but to me, it's what is easily acquired by the average, blue-collar, common man. Something that is nowhere near the price of even a cheap guitar. My ukulele was around a 100 bucks. Granted, got a bit of a discount, but that was just a small, typical "on sale" discount. Talking about new prices here, not used.

Love my uke. It's been rock solid. Stays in tune, always plays nice, and doesn't seem to let anything bother it. Some of the best 100 bucks I ever spent.

I've had many people say the same thing to me that it sounds like a toy. It never once occurred to me to be offended by that.

I'll admit to thinking that the uke sounded like a toy a couple of decades ago. It still sounds like a toy in some folks hands, but it can also make beautiful music in the hands of a musician.
The harmonica gets the same rep. Many folks consider it a toy. I've heard folks say, "I'm not musical. The only things I can play are the radio and the mouth organ."
The tin whistle sounds like a toy when played by some folks, but can make wonderful music as well.
The same can be said of the washboard or even the guitar, I'm afraid.
My friend Alan says, "What's the point of learning another fiddle tune. They all sound the same."
People's opinions differ. To some, the bagpipes sound like a cat caught in a lawn mower, to others it's heavenly.
I love the sound of the banjo. My friend Matt posted on his Facebook page:
"My upstairs neighbors at Capital really love it when I play the banjo. They tap their foot loudly on my ceiling with such enthusiasm, it sounds like they're about to put a hole right through it. Now, if only I could get them to do it at the right tempo."
