I decided to pull one of the pins from my new Recording King G6 parlor. I had to use this puller I have because there was no way to pull it by hand. I wanted to measure it to see if the Graph tech 3 degree taper pins would fit , I have 2 spares.
I measured the RK ones and they have a much larger head so the pin puller was difficult to get on. I did the measurement right under the collar and the 3/4" from that. I need to take a bit over .010" under the collar and .004" 3/4" down and doing this they will maybe still fit tight. Not sure since plastic pins don't seem to be perfectly round. I read RK pins are 7 degree taper and this is what RK's site says.
The ones that came out of my RK dirty 30's 7 were a bit larger at the top and a bit smaller at the bottom than the G6 so they are not consistent.
Thought I would use a drill to turn the pin and sand paper to reduce the diameter to the size the plastic pins are then check the fit and if still to tight take a bit more off till they fit snug but not so tight.
I have no idea why pins are such a PITA . Plastic are alright but tusq is better , at least they do not bend . I doubt the sound will change. I just don't feel pins should be so tight you need a puller to get them out.
Plus the pins I need have a small groove through the collar as the RK and Gragh tech have. It needs this for the string to clear when seated. It seems a bit difficult to hold a pin and turn it by hand against sand paper.
I used these in my 2004 seagull grand parlor and they fit a bit loose but work fine. They have traditional and presentation pins . The presentation have a larger head and a C shaped groove but a smaller diameter under the collar . I used those in the RH dirty 30's but needed to slot the low E and A into the bridge a bit or they would not fit. Gragh Tech only shows the under collar size. The main thing is the pin needs to fit snug at the ball end.
