So, ya, I got a new guitar. It "sort of" happened by accident. But not really. Maybe it was actually destiny. Lemme 'splain.
So, after about a month and a half or so of having the Amber Trails MJ from Seagull, I was a bit underwhelmed by it. The novelty wore off really fast. That's always a bad sign with me. Usually, when very happy with a guitar, the novelty never wears off, I just appreciate the guitar more over time.
Anyways, I was back at Long & McQuade ( not my usual guitar store, so I never expect much from this place, but it's close and convenient for certain stuff ) where I originally bought the guitar and I was noodling with some more Taylors and the 114 again. ( when in a guitar store, you have to play some guitars right? Ain't that some kind of law or something? ) Also chatting with some other people about guitars and stuff.
Anyways, the salesman that I bought the guitar from was there as well. I happened to be noodling on a new 114e they had got in and mumbled out loud to myself, "Ah man. I should have got this guitar instead. It just sounds so alive and sweet."
The salesguy happens to hear this and asks me, "What's that? You're not happy with the Seagull?"
I said, "Eeeh, not really. Dunno why, but this Taylor just sounds so much better. I'm not sure where my ears where at when I compared them, but the more I do so, the more this Taylor jumps ahead. But ah well, the Seagull is not terrible and I'm stuck with it for now."
Salesguy, "No you're not. You've only had it about, what? A month and a half, maybe 2 months now?"
I say, "Ya, so?"
He goes, "Just return it. You can have the Taylor. The Seagull is still under warranty and I know you take care of your guitars, I can tell."
I go, "Really? What do you mean by that? I can return it or trade it in?"
He goes, "No, just return it. There's a tiny restocking fee, but you can just return it and get the Taylor."
I go, "How much of a restocking fee?"
He says, "Oh, just about 2 percent or something like that."
So, long story short, I go home, grab Seagull, return it and they never even charged me the restocking fee!
I've had it about 2 weeks now, give or take and I'm SO happy with it. I've already had it on stage and man, this new thing they did with the Expression 2 system is amazing. It seems they scrapped their old system and are going with this new system on all their guitars all the way from 100 to 900 series guitars. It really works super well too.
But that aside, the guitar itself just sounds so amazing. I really don't know how they do it, but this thing sounds so "alive." It still has the brightness I wanted in the first place, but it also just has so much articulation and almost this amazingly built in reverb affect. The sustain is off the charts compared to the Seagull it replaced.
I also love the GA body shape. Very similar to the MJ, but the lower bout is a bit smaller, the exact same size of a dread's lower bout and not a bit bigger like the MJs which makes it super comfortable to hold and play. It is actually simply a dread with a slimmer waistline, but what a difference that slimmer waistline makes.
Bin playing this thing so non-stop lately it's not even funny and the novelty is not wearing off. I'm just loving it more every day.
So ya, that's my latest. I have no pics right now, but the video review of it is coming soon to a youtube channel near you!
Let me be clear here, I'm not dissing the Seagull Amber Trails MJ, just saying that in this particular guitar, I'm just so much happier with. Still love my 2 other Gulls and they are not going anywhere. But man-O-man, I'm a Taylor fan now. lol.
