I'd like to see some photos of fretted instruments that are not guitars. I'll bet we all have at least one.

Here are my mando-things. A Washburn from the early eighties, a Trinity College octave mandolin from the nineties and an Eastman 605 from just after the turn of the century.

Three of my banjos - A catalog banjo from before the war, an S.S.Stewart tango banjo and a banjo that I built in the seventies.

Two of my ukuleles, a Johnson concert resophonic and a Kala concert.

Although we gave that couch to the Sally Ann and have torn down the wallpaper and painted the walls, all of these instruments are still in the house.

Nice set of string instruments Jim,
I only have one other stringed instrument other than the guitars, that is a tenor ukulele.
In the past have had quite a few ukuleles, Irish four string banjos, five string banjos, mandolins, classical guitars, and last but not least a violin.

I have a late 60's Kay tenor banjo I picked up on Craigslist for $40 from the daughter of the original owner, in near mint condition. Maybe someday I'll learn that to play it.

I also have a tenor ukulele and a soprano ukulele. The tenor for me, the soprano for my daughter. We've played around with it a little.

I have a violin somewhere that our oldest son had to have and never learned. It's bit older and a decent instrument. The guy we got it from played it on a CD he professionally recorded. He plays many instruments.

I'm sure I'll get a cheap mandolin someday. I haven't had one fall in my lap yet.

I also picked up a balalaika. An old Russian triangular 3 stringed instrument. Picked it up on Shopgoodwill.com for $25 shipped. It needs new strings and a good cleaning. I'm sure I will never play it.

RobertW, I have a couple of those old zithers, a mandolin zither which was given to me by a cousin in the States and a guitar zither which came in an auction job lot with a fiddle that I really wanted and an autoharp that I gave to my brother.

This is the Autoharp I gave my brother. It's now a diatonic in D.

CTGull, This is a balalaika that my brother owns. I fixed it up for him so it's playable. Being a mandolin player, he tunes it DAE. A guitar or uke player might like CEA tuning.

Here's a large baritone ukulele that may have started life as a small tenor guitar. It is presently tuned DGBE and strung with NylGut strings.

This one is a Regal Tiple made in Chicago. It has ten strings and is tuned gG-cCc-eEe-aa

I have a bunch of Autoharps, but these two are my favourites, a black box from mid-sixties, now set up as an E/A semi-diatonic

And an Appalachian from the same period, now set up as a G/D semi-diatonic.

Here's a Filipino ukulele made from three coconut shells that my son and his wife brought me from the Philippines.

This is a Filipino banduria that I received from my son and his wife after a trip to the Philippines. The peghead is longer than the neck. It has 14 strings which I tune E-AA-DD-GGG-BBB-EEE. This is not the standard tuning, but I found it much easier to treat it as an octave guitar.

And here are three banjoleles. The two on the right were given to me by my friend Jimmy Bowskill and the one on the left was bought , in pieces, from a music store for $12.00.

I think Maggie's gonna have to get a place of her own.

One of the fun parts of doing repairs is that people bring all sorts of strange and wonderful instruments to me. There are a fair number of old uke's around - here are a couple of Martins (one is mine)

Le Domino

This is a banjo uke, the head was shot but the owner wanted to keep it, kind of a family heirloom

We have a very active Mariachi music scene and I get to work on some of their wonderful instruments

The last one is kind of interesting - its a Mexican vihuela and the frets are tied on (like a lute). My challenge was a to refret it

This one actually is a guitar (or at least a GLO) but it was so unique that I'd like to share it. A friend's father was stationed in Europe during WWII and he picked up an Italian built "guitar" and apparently made the "gig bag" for it. It traveled all over Europe with him and on one side of the bag he listed the places he visited, on the other side were the names of the men in his company. I was deeply honored when my fried asked me to restore it - there were many cracks but when we were done he was able to play it in tribute to his dad.
