I have an Epiphone EJ200 guitar which I love to play acoustically because at the moment I'm not happy with the pre-amp sound. It originally came with an E-Sonic pre-amp and that featured a magnetic pup as well as a USP. The problem was when using just the USP the bass E and A strings were the only two coming thru' the amp. I tried various things to correct this but all in vain so I removed the whole pre-amp and pups, enlarged the hole and fitted a Fishman Presys pre-amp and USP. This did improve the sound a little in as much as I now had bottom two strings and top two strings sounding but 4th and 3rd were soundless. I had previously sent away on E-Bay for some USP's from China and have tried each of them but still no better. Now I have sent away on E-Bay for a more expensive USP US$24 from the USA, in fact I've ordered 3 of them. When these arrive I shall fit one in the Epiphone and then with fingers crossed I'll test it hoping that all strings will be of equal volume. I shall then keep the other two in case I ever need them.
In the meantime I have put a Seymour Duncan 'Woodie' in the soundhole and thru my Fishman Loudbox Mini that's not sounding too bad, in fact I'll prolly use that guitar for my Saturday busking gig. Oh yes I go to our local pedestrian Mall every Saturday for 2hours and busk singing country songs and I love it. I have regular following of quite a few people who sit at tables outside the cafe opposite and listen to me for longer than the cafe owner likes,I think but they do buy coffees and sandwiches or pie/ sausage rolls. She's never mentioned it tho' and I do bring her customers. If its raining I stay home and I've heard that the cafe closes early too.

Sounds nice, Slowpoke- wish I could come by for a listen. I live in MD, but don't know where you're playing..... went to Gettysburg PA for a visit to a 300 yr. old restaurant last evening, and listened to a fellow in the place playing a laute and singing, and another fellow outside playing something I had not seen before - a small table, hollow sound box top, with almost piano string setup on top, from side to side, separated into three sections by bridges. Played with a couple of wooden spoons striking the strings. Really nice....... but this is a jumbo body board. I should be talking about my Taylor 418e......

Had to be one of those. It looked very much like that picture. Sounds like a combo of glockenspiel and harpsichord, although I did not see the player strike with more than one spoon at any given stroke.

Thanks for that - I wanted to know what that was.....

I've heard hammer dulcimers being played, and they do sound nice -- but

can you imagine having to tune one, or put on a new set of strings?

I almost bought a piano tuning kit back in the late 70s..... it would've come with clientele as well, a family friend was retiring. It used to take him a couple of hours to tune one. I went to guitars around the same time period. The hammer dulcimer however is just about as portable as a guitar though. The fellow I saw yesterday was using a modified guitar case to carry it in. It looked like the legs came off & laid in the neck space, and the table on top of that with a pad separating them. Takes a big case though.

Well the continuing saga of my Epiphone EJ200. The "expensive" USP arrived from the USA in Mondays post so on Wednesday I decided to fit it. I only had to solder it to the existing wire going to the pre-amp and then re-string the guitar and tune up. I then plugged it in my Fishman LB Mini and could not believe the result. #@$*&%$# the only string that was coming thru' was the bass string, nothing else. So rather than throw the guitar across the room I quickly placed it gently in its case, closed the case and returned it to my music room. It has now gone from bad to worse, but I still have 2 more USP's to try when I'm in a better frame of mind.. S

Ouch! Sorry to hear that (but glad you gently put the guitar away -- after all, it's not the guitar's fault). Hope one of the additional ESPs to come in solves the issues.

I spoke with a mate earlier today and told him about my Epiphone problems and he said I'm not getting the USP flat down against the bottom of the slot.
I assured him I was making sure it was flat and that I'm not that dumb. He didn't believe me so we've arranged that he comes to my house on Monday and he'll plug the guitar in and make sure only the bass string is coming thru' then he reckons he'll remove pins/strings etc and then remove the saddle to see who's right. Once he's done that I'll fit one of the other USP's that I bought while he stands watching.. We got a 6 pack on this and I'm gonna win.. S

Well friends the six pack is mine. I was sitting at my PC this morning wishing my mate George had chose Sunday to come and check out my Epiphone EJ200 when there's a knock on my door and its my mate George and he'd decided to come up today mainly to get out of gardening after his wife had mentioned the amount of weeds that needed pulling, by saying "Al wants me to look at his Epiphone and sort out the problem." Anyway I got the guitar out and set up my work table ready for the task ahead. I have a little electric drill and an attachment for unwinding the strings and put that within reach. George started loosening the strings, pulled the pins and removed the strings from their holes in the bridge. He then put his specs on and gently lifted the saddle to reveal the USP sitting flat against the bottom of the slot. So I laughed and said "Make it a 6 pack of Corona." So then I got out one of the cheaper USP's that I'd bought and proceeded to solder and fit that under Georges watchful eye. Once done I then put the strings etc back and tuned up and plugged it in my Fishman and to both our surprise all strings came across at the same volume. The Epiphone is now done and dusted and will now take its place on the busking roster. Tomorrow George will be coming up as originally planned to bring up my winnings and I guess it'll be a jam session for a few hours, then I might offer him one of my newly gotten Coronas'.. S

Somewhere in the past, I had an Epiphone EJ200, liked it great value for money guitar, but I found it a little on the large size for me.
Only last week in the local guitar shop, they had a new EJ,200 in, picked it up and had a little plonk, nice guitar, went in guitar shop this week EJ200 gone.

Derick,You're right mate it is a big body and I'm not a big bloke but with a little bit of practice at throwing your arm over the body in various places it becomes a comfortable guitar to play. I bought it mainly because being a big bodied guitar it would sound out pretty good around a campfire session. It was pointed out to me by my wife that we never sit around campfires, but I reckon there's always that chance and I'll have the guitar to do it.
My mate George will be coming up this afternoon for a session and hopefully bringing my 6 pack with him. We could wipe them out this afternoon and I can throw the evidence in the trash, we'll just have to wait and see.. S
