Every once in a while someone mentions in passing a trade in deal with a dealer that went better than they expected.
I thought it would be nice to get some positive stories together in once place.
To start the ball rolling:
A No Cash Trade-In
(all dollar values CDN)
Last April I bought a Fender Armstrong Hellcat Mahogany 12 String from a local Music School that had decide to expand it's instrument selling lines by becoming a Fender and Gretsch Distributor. I got a good price for it. Certainly the cheapest in Montreal.
But all was not well, I found the narrow nut (1.77") to be very uncomfortable to play. So the guitar spent a lot of time just hanging there. After 10 months, when I decided to trade-in for a Martin HPL at a different dealer. The trade was going good, I was offered just 50$ less than I paid. But when the manager took the guitar out of the case, he noticed a discolouration on the bottom of the guitar ( this issue recounted elsewhere). Obviously, the trade-in fell through.
I went back to the original dealer with my concerns over the discolouration losing me a trade-in deal. He went to bat for me with Fender. But Fender refused to take responsibility after a 10 month delay. The Music School manager stepped up and offered me a cash refund equivalent to the trade-in I lost.. or a full price, including taxes, trade-in for any other guitar.
After a bit of research, involving Gretsch 12 strings and resonators. I decided on a Gretsch Mahogany BoxCar. The last time I had looked it was selling for $449 at 2 dealers. But when I went in to do the deal, he had dropped it to 399.(485 with taxes!)
He did a direct trade, and added a free setup! I had paid $409 including taxes for the Fender 12 string. I figure I made $100 on paper,
Your turn.
remember , dealer trades.
Why?
Because people, as opposed to dealers, may be often be trading in desperation, grief, poverty etc.. What is a great deal to you in such a situation, is an under-duress situation to them. IMHO Not Something to Brag about, that is why I specified Dealer Trades. Dealers, are primarily about the bottom line and secondarily about their reputation.
