Well... maybe not a miracle, but still....

I sold a guitar today. The Mitchell 0120- the gentleman I sold it to drove an hour to get it.

We chit-chatted a bit. He's been playin for 30+years- he bought it to use for guests at his "open mic night"-

said he was tired of people trying to kill his D35 Martin-

When I learned he was the organizer of the open mic, I referred to in a different thread 20 miles away- a light bulb came on. I showed him a video of me and asked was I good enough? He said, enthusiastically, absolutely, and invited me to come because I would fit right in. He has maybe 8 or 9 regulars that come from as far away as I am.

He provides all the stage equipment that he uses professionally with the 4 bands he performs with

The next one they have is January 7th-

seagullplayer, that's one of the reasons I want to do it- I know absolutely no one who plays an instrument....except the boys mom who was a pretty fair organ player in church, many, many years ago.

I don't know nothing about nothing, but if it where I.

I would figure on two songs, keep a third in your pocket in case some regulars are out. And I would take my best guitar with a pick-up in it.

Depending on the set-up, you may just about have to use a pick-up.

You may be about to see why folks use an active pick-up with controls on the guitar.

I like to play sitting down, so I would also take my stool. But I would leave it in the car till I saw if they already had one to use.

Don't forget your tuner, and your smile.

For some background, at the nursing home we did a one hour show. Songs with a few jokes and banter thrown in. My set list was normally about 16 songs. (Jokes/banter =ish changing performers)

I can't recomend anything, due to never doing it, but just be yourself and pick your favourite songs.

Man, now that is pressure! I have narrowed down to 3- but 2

I'm practicin, Coffee and Cigarettes (an original) and, San Francisco Mabel Joy, Mickey Newbury- I have to say, I do it really well. And Coffee and Cigarettes is the first song I play when I pick up a guitar- I know both, intimately....

The organizer told me they have a stool! Hot dang! And, he said they can mic up the guitar-

I put new Martin Monel's on the Black Lag yesterday (the ones it had have been there since Sept 6) and I do believe that is the guitar I'll use- mainly because of how it sounds, but I'm also very comfortable with it and don't mess up very much

The first time my wife ever heard me on stage was an open mic about 40 years ago, back before we were an item, she gave me some good advice: "Don't say excrement into an open mic when you make a mistake Jim, and there's a chance that no one will even notice."

(Of course it wasn't really "excrement" that I said, but this is a family show.)

Garland, The only thing I can add to seagullplayer,'s perfect advice is to bring 3 songs that don't sound the same. Even in a very short set, it helps to have variety. If the songs all sound the same (same style, whatever) you'll notice you have their attention for the first one, maybe part way into the second, but then they'll start milling about and talking amongst themselves. lol.

But first and foremost, relax and have fun with it. Of all the things that are challenging about performing on stage, or just in front of a bunch of people you don't know, the stage-fright or "butterflies" nervousness stuff is the biggest. Just keep reminding yourself to just have fun with it.

It also helps to picture the audience in their underwear......apparently.........so some say. I'm not sure why.

I've noticed, when I've played for my son and his family, I get a bit anxious and tend to play too fast- but, too, I haven't played for them in a couple of months and find I'm getting pretty comfortable using my imagination that an audience is there- because: I've been penciled in to play, here at the apartments, where I stays, for January 12 or 13- so, I've been rehearsing to gauge my time to include between song back stories on the next song-

Yesterday and last night I played over and over and over and over. First, the 3 songs I have in mind- then the remainder of the play list I have for playin here- last night I played for 3 hours - my fingers started gettin sore and I started getting fret buzz and finger buzz -

good thing I'm not doin a full blown concert

And, I actually changed me mind on which guitar to use- I tried the Black Lag- micing it, then just my voice to me Fishman mini- was not encouraged- so, I thought, what they hey, let me try the Red Rocket-

wow! Killed it! Plugged it in and used the mic just for my voice and impressed myself- which ain't easy cause the Fishman hasn't impressed me in the past- but, last night, I got it and the Rocket dialed in and dang! I'm pumped now!

Derick, I have to give you special shout out for that line about y'all bein there with me-
