Since gettin into this guitar playin life, and actually since I first tried to play some 60 years ago, I've sat on me couch and played... doin the open mic deal makes me see/realize that standin to play commands more attention be paid by observers. In public that's a good thang... hard for me though, not bein a spotlight seeker. Sittin is more comfortable all the way around... but, there is somethin to be said for standin...
John, the gentleman who hosts the open mic deal says; he stands when he plays electric guitar with the band he plays with, but an acoustic guitar should be played while sittin... Mickey Newbury (one of my favorites) sits every time I see him in a video. But, all the others stand. Well, except Willie, on a couple of songs/videos he has out recently. Waylon sat late in his career but his health was goin down hill... most all the others at open mic sit... though a couple did stand their first time...
So, I've started practicin (a little the last couple of weeks) standin while playin... yesterday I went through the list I've put together for next Friday, (8 songs), 3 times. It bothers me back a wee bit not bein used to it, but I notice it affords opportunity to add emphasis through body language...
I'm startin to feel a tiny bit guilty for not standin now to practice... but, it is inconvenient to do a lot...
and, at 74, I'm not sure how much longer I'll even be able to stand and play so here I are... cryin in me coffee...
John just sent me a picture montage of last week... I'll post it in a bit so you can see the differences.
