My thoughts? Ambivalent maybe. Not everyone liked Elvis, or Sinatra or Cash...
I think it has a lot to do with style.... do any of you remember the comedian, Gallagher.... he had a skit about style... presentation, presentation, presentation... of course the pro's have an advantage (they sometimes earned) of the best equipment available to enhance the presentation...

Bob Dylan showed how lack of singing skills can be made up for by using a kind of 'musical speech' instead, making the artist a vocalist rather than a singer. There are some powerful examples of this style. But maybe I'm reading 'singer' a little too literally there.
