There are some folks, few and far between, who can play only their own songs and put on an entertaining show, but most folks who do only their own material bore me silly.
I will admit that I'm not a prolific composer and could never put on an evening's show doing only my own material, but there are so many great songs that shouldn't die out just because their composer has died. I always feel honoured when someone else performs or records one of my tunes. This hasn't happened often, but I'm happy to say that it has happened a few times.
I don't often perform songs that were radio hits, but prefer to do more obscure or traditional songs. I haven't heard Dave Becker, but perhaps he just didn't think he could do a good job of the song that was requested. . .or maybe he just didn't like it. I have had that experience and sometimes will say something like, "No, I don't know that one, but here's one you may like that uses a lot of the same notes."

I just listened to Dave on Youtube and really liked him and I haven't seen anyone playing a Mossman guitar for decades. I had a chance to try one in the late seventies and it was a cannon.

Jim, I agree with you. When one plays covers, one creates a common connection between the performer and the listener. The listener hears something familiar, or at least known, and can better appreciate what the performer is doing, if they're doing it well.

In my little world and in my little experience, I've only had people ask me to play originals, or ask if I do originals, or even ask if I've got anything recorded like an album or something, after they've heard me do covers, never the other way around.

Also, people and music have a powerful connection. When you play a cover, it usually stirs up good memories in most people and that's part of why they appreciate the music so much. When you play only originals, it stirs up nothing, unless they're the rare type that likes to hear never-before-heard stuff for the sake of novelty and can actually pay attention. lol.

That's not to knock originals, I love 'em. It's just they seem to need some "introduction" experience before most people get interested. Again, just in my experience, YMMV.

Jim, TonyKgull, I agree with both of you... personally, I don't consider myself very good, singin or playin, .... that said, I can write some pretty good songs, and Mr Becker really liked "Janet", the first song I wrote and did a video of, which for some reason has garnered over 6000 views

... while the others have way less than 1000... and others who have heard my originals have been impressed... amateur and pro alike. I'm not comfortable sayin that... but, it is what it is.

I think of myself as an interpreter... musically. To interpret adds personal emotion. A friend said to me, after she heard my version of Hands On The Wheel, you make people feel it... which makes me successful at what I'm tryin to accomplish... well, that and I do this for posterity...

For instance, I told myself this mornin I was goin to do all originals next Friday. I have before and I do enjoy doin songs I've written... BUT, earlier this week I remembered The Wayward Wind... there are several versions (interpretations)... I prefer the slower, masculine versions... admittedly, mine will be more soulful... sang deeper and not near as smooth or have the professional guitar playin... but, the people who hear it will know I feel it.... especially since I will sing A West Texas Wind (an original) just before I do it. Like last night, I did A Quiet Sunday Mornin (original) and followed it with Sunday Mornin Comin Down... one sets the stage for the other... I try to make the set flow/mood... with covers and originals if possible... if not, the just originals or just covers...
