Those of you who know me from the old AGC site will know that I have been looking to buy an OM for a loooooooong time. Even before I purchased my beloved Seagull Artist Mosaic in 2013, my intention was always to replace my Garrison acoustic with a dread and an OM. Been considering a number of different OM models over the years, including the Seagull Maritime Folk, Guild GAD30R, Larivee OM-03, Larivee OM-40, Eastman E6, and a very expensive Lakewood GA size. I have been pretty set on the Larivee OM's, but they are very expensive for me. The main thing is to try and get some recording done, and also need a couch guitar.
So, this morning, weird things started to happen. Firstly, I get a call from a good friend, who was a pro-muso for over 20 years. He left the business to make furniture, and is now only playing in a worship setting in a small South African town. We get chatting, and he tells me that he's been keen to put together some orginal songs, but needs a structure. He has all the recording gear etc. I say to him that I have original songs and the song strucutres, but I need a guy with recording gear and skills, as well as pro muso skills to help me put it all together. He's keen to work on the project together over time!!!
Then I go to the SA Music Store FB page, and lo and behold, there is a second hand Guild GAD30 in mint condition. Exact specs I am looking for - OM shape, solid sitka spruce top, solid hog b/s, 1 3/4 bone nut, bone saddle. Bridge pins are plastic, but that is easily changed. Price is less than half of the Larivee with almost exactly thre same specs (And I mean almost exactly - Probably different bracing pattern and higher quality woods used in Larivee). Guild made in China.
Here is the most bizarre thing. I tell my wife this story, and she says, "Do you want it for your birthday?"
So this hardly ever happens!!!
What do you all think of Chinese made Guild GAD's?
