Our move to New Zealand may be imminent, and so my worship team duties at church have come to an end. Although somewhat sad, the pressure is off a bit for a while. I can just play for enjoyment, what I want to, and when I want to, without having to think about anyone else (Havent done that in years!).
So I gave the Tele a good ol burn last night and really loved it, perhaps more so than many of the times I have played it in the past. But it got me thinking that its a really bright electric, and I started wondering what kind of semi-hollows would sound good to my ears.
For me, I really rate a semi-hollow with a brightish tone, so that you can still hear the acoustic timbre. If I wanted a dark sounding guitar, the Les Paul would do just fine. But I am not really a fan of the ES335 sound with the humbuckers. They sound too muddy to be on a semi-hollow (for me anyway). I had my heart set on an Epi Casino with P90's, but after playng a few, I have been a little underwhelmed with the scream of the P90's, which can also sound surpisingly dark.
So where I am going here. I started listening to online clips again with a high quality headset. I stumbled across a Guild Starfire IV with L1 ("Little Buckers") pickups, solid maple centre block, and a stop tailpiece. So this is well into ES335 territory, but those L1 pickups just transform this guitar into something really special. They seem to have a brighter jangle tone withough losing the warmth. And seem incredibly versatile for a number of styles. You'll see what I mean by watching the vids below
I think I'm in love. This could my the Epi Casino killer. And my next guitar.
