Greetings and salutations! I've enjoyed browsing through this forum while I've been reviving my guitar habit the past few years. Seems like a small but well-informed group. This is my first contribution, in the form of a question:
How are older S&Ps regarded? Precious heirlooms, or fledgling efforts?
I have a chance to purchase a used S&P Rosewood Folk at a nice price, less than $500 US. It's a 1998, complete with that comically anachronistic headstock logo, with hippie-style lettering that must have looked dated even then. But the rest of it looks beautiful. The playing feel was very familiar; one of the benefits of this brand is how it's provided me with two archtops, an electric and an S&P cedar Mini Jumbo that all have the same fretboard dimensions. That's making it easier to switch between them, and improving my sloppy left hand technique.
The Rosewood Folk sounds like a real bargain. The name isn't widely known here in Denver, a town that isn't very cosmopolitan, and that's probably lowered the value. My main hesitation about getting this one is how much I love my Mini Jumbo. It's only a humble Woodland model, with Wild Cherry B&S, but it's the sweetest, most compelling tone I've ever heard. Chords sing out like a choir. When I played the Rosewood Folk, I didn't hear anything that special. I'm about to revisit the shop and ask for a demo, after a string change.
My practical question is, if I buy this one and decide to sell it later, will there be a market? And is a 20-year-old solid wood guitar always better than a 10-year-old laminate?
