Hi folks!
Ordered a Taylor Academy 12 Grand Concert from Musician's Friend...usually order from Sweetwater but I had a 15% coupon so I couldn't resist the price ($424)!
It arrived yesterday...was a super hot day...box was very hot...not a good idea to open it w/o letting it acclimate for awhile...I had to leave for work so I didn't get a chance to check it out until today.
I read the previous thread on here regarding the new Academy series.
I have to say I am extremely pleased with it. I only got to play it for around 15 minutes...have to leave for work again now, but I'll post a more detailed review with pics when I get home tonight.
I read up quite a bit on it before deciding on this model...the consensus seems to be that the build quality & sound is on par with the 114, so if you don't need the cosmetic extras that the 100 series has, the Academy is an incredible deal. No guitar stores near me, so I wasn't able to compare them side by side, but the only major difference I believe is that the Academy has no bracing on the back as they are built a bit differently. Love the armrest on the Academy! Also the 114 is a Grand Auditorium, & the Academy 12 is the slightly smaller Grand Concert (close to a 000 size).
As I've mentioned before, I love the Grand Concert size...I'm sure I would love the GA size also, but some folks have said the smaller GC size is a bit more comfortable to play...as I do most of my playing on the couch, I think the GC will be perfect for me.
Setup was almost perfect...the neck has no relief at all, but no buzzing, so I may leave it alone for now...Taylors take a special truss rod wrench which I need to order. Action seems perfect...haven't measured it yet, but will later. Elixir strings sound great...just about every guitar I order, including most of my Seagulls, come with DOA strings! lol Feels great...plays easy...love the sound...folks complain about Taylor being too bright but it sounds well balanced to me.
Well worth the $$$ to me.
Have to leave for work now...will post more later when I've had a chance to play it some more!!
