Difference Between Seagull Models

Thanks CTGull, beyond the materials, are the bracing, shape, and other contruction details the same or are there differences to improve sound and/or simplify construction?

I have somewhat the same question as the original post. I bought my first guitar in the late 1980's, a Seagull SM6. I never really noticed there were "different" models (?) - the 6 or SM6 or Original, if I'm phrasing that correctly.

The blue label on the inside has typed S.M.(6) and a serial number of 21027. Looking elsewhere in this forum, that serial number may mean it was made in 1989. I have always thought it was a cedar top with laminate wild cherry sides and back. However, it could be a spruce top with laminate mahogany sides? I should know my woods better!

So my actual question is - what does SM6 designate in a Seagull guitar versus a 6 or such?

Thanks CTGull..!! That helps me understand it perfectly! Yes, I've always assumed it was a cedar top because it has always had a slight (orange?) hue to the top, that has just darkened slightly with age. A spruce top would have been much blonder I suppose - and as you say, the label would reflect that.

Thanks for clearing up what the SM meant. Always thought I had an S6, without really looking at it. Now if I could just find the original receipt for it - I'd love to know what it cost back then!

WOW!! That's an early one!! Probably 1984.

I have an SM bought new in 1998 or 1999 in Montreal. I believe it's a cedar top. But I couldn't discern from the posts above whether it is solid mahogany back or sides. Any idea?

Interestingly, I thought for years it was an S6, Cedar + Wild Cherry. I think the tag or receipt said so. But one day I looked in to the label and it just says SM.

I don't know all the diffs, but one big construction technique changed from back then to any S models made in the last 10 years or so, and that's the neck. 

You most likely have a bolt on neck on your guitar, they're all epoxied necks now, making neck resets "almost" impossible.  So cherish those old classics.  If you take care of them, you can theoretically have them for the rest of your life cuz if they ever need a neck reset, it won't cost you a fortune.

CTGull, could probably tell you what exact year they went to epoxied necks, I can't recall.  He can also tell you all the ins and outs regarding neck resets.
