2 days ago I added more shims to the dovetail, I had sanded them in an attempt to get it back together after taking it apart. The heel fit looked great. Then I glued the neck back on (clamped), checking the heel gap a few times in the neck hour.
Yesterday I unclamped it, finding about a .002/.003" heel gap, completely normal.
TODAY I put old strings on it to finish filing the nut slots. I've got it tuned to Eb (don't want to break a string) and checked all the frets, up to the 14th. No buzzing!!! The action is actually 1/64" lower than I expected, but the action should creep up 1/64" as the neck settles in. But it plays great!! And sounds pretty good, even with old strings.
I'll beat on it for a few days then put it in the case for a few weeks.
It still needs the outside of the nut to be finished, the guitar needs to be cleaned up, the fretboard & bridge need to be oiled. And anything else I can find.
I sanded the top of the nut to only 1 diameter of the string (or less) set in it, and rerounded all edges. Oiled the fretboard & bridge. Cleaned the rest of the guitar. Set the nut with a touch of wood glue. Installed Elixir Nanoweb PB light strings.
IT'S ALIVE!!!! And it looks, sounds, and plays great!!!!
THANKS!! I'm hoping to finish the FG-500 tonight. Then maybe I can finish some of my guitars. THEN maybe I can get to learning how to play them!! Or start another project. I really need to concentrate on fixing some up to sell and not starting more custom projects.
I wanted to get a quote from FEDEX to ship the guitar back, but I didn't want to risk having THE guitar in the case. So I weighed it. 4.61 lbs. Then I pulled another guitar off the rack. 4.61 lbs!!! What are the chances??!! I put that guitar in his case, got the box he shipped it in out of the garage, and packed the case in the box with the original expanding foam bags. That awkward beast was fun getting to FEDEX and back!! It's 47" long, 20" wide and 8" deep. It's a good thing I have long arms!!
$115 from coast to coast!! And I'm going to get a couple of rolls of bubble wrap to be sure the guitar is secure inside the case. $125!!! OUCH!!
Got to FEDEX Office 5 minutes before they closed at 9pm. Damn near anything that could go wrong went wrong. As I'm running down the stairs to pack it the cat reaches out and slits my right middle finger open!! Now I'm bleeding all over. Got that patched up and I just kept dropping or losing everything. Bought WAY too much bubble wrap!! Finally got it packed at 8:42 and as I'm trying to write out the addresses my pen runs out!!! Now I'm trying to find something to write with!!
I don't trust anything plastic touching lacquer, so I put a layer of bubble wrap in the bottom of the case, then a layer of paper towel. Slacked the strings and wrapped paper around the neck. Then a few layers of bubble wrap until the case close with a little difficulty. And some wadded up paper at the end of the guitar. It's not moving!!!
I put some bubble wrap on the bottom of the box, and on the lower sides, then the expanded foam bags it originally came with, then some bubble wrap on top. It barely closed! And taped it up good.
Now it'll sit there for the next 18 hours until the truck picks it up. I wouldn't be able to get there until probably 8pm tomorrow. They have it!! All we have to do is wait!!
He got it Tuesday 7-2-19, but was extremely busy with work, then had 12 people at his house for the holiday.
Here's his review:
Sorry, we've had 12 people staying here for the 4th weekend and I haven't had a moment to myself (till this morning).
This guitar plays so well it's frightening. I can't believe it's the same guitar I sent you. As I said before, people always complained it was hard to play but I never seemed to notice since it was the only guitar I owned. Now, it's a completely different and joyful experience.
The only downside is I know just how badly my skills have degraded after not playing for so many years. Practice is now in my future just to try to get back to parity with where I used to be oh so many years ago.
Thanks again for doing such an outstanding job on my baby. I cannot thank you enough for bringing my guitar back to life and saving it from a life of being just a wall hanging decoration. It look like it has never been touched and plays beautifully and I couldn't be happier.
