I’ve been thinking about this again, obsoleting the YamaGull concept and going with a wider thicker vintage 12 string Yamaha FG-230 neck on the smaller body FG-75-1, or possibly reuse the larger FG-230 body, although that may be too boomy. Of course, first I need to find a donor guitar cheap. All of my recent projects were made from guitars I already have. While I do have a FG-230, I got it from the original owner and I can’t hack it up for this, even though I don’t play it. I need to find another one. The sad part is I talked to someone in January who had one near Boston with a broken truss rod. I have an extra truss rod!! Maybe I could have gotten it cheap??? I found it was on the Facebook Marketplace. I had messaged him in January and he offered it to me for $50, but there’s no way I could sneak it in from there!! I’ll have to watch Shopgoodwill.com and the local CraigsList for a broken one or a bargain.
The big question is what to call the project:
YamaWAN (Wide Ass Neck) had some likes.
YamaWAT (Wide And Thick)
YamaWT (Wide & Thick)
YamaXL (Xtra Large) - I LIKE THIS ONE!!
The goal will be a 1.80” wide neck with 1.50” string spacing & 2.25” saddle string spacing. The neck will have to be sanded narrower and thinner. Will need to make neck profile templates.
Convert to Bolt On.
The logo could be the same modified “Y” Yamaha tuning fork, just stretched out 50% wider. Maybe try to make some kind of 3D effect that will translate well to a single solid color.
YamaXL could have my “Y” Yamaha logo with “X” & “L” in a smaller but wider font on either side or to the right.
Use every other hole and plug the rest?? Plug all 12 holes and add new thin head plate?? Remove and replace existing head plate?? I need to do a layout.
