I have two Martins I bought from Guitar Center. The CEO7 came from the Raleigh,NC store and the OM-21 (used) was bought online. I have to say, GC has been good to me- I've bought many guitars from them over the last 10 years or so, both new and used. There doesn't seem to be many other shops now in Piedmont NC so Guitar Center gets my business. While perhaps not as cheap as some, between the stores and their web site they have a very large selection and my experience has been generally good.
I visited the Raleigh NC Guitar Center last year when we were passing thru. They people were very nice and the selection was good. Didn't have time to try anything. It seemed to be a cut above the ones in Connecticut.
I was on a little holiday in the palm Springs area recently. One thing I wanted to do was visit the guitar center there since I'd heard so much about the chain. Major disappointment! The acoustic room was about the size of my bedroom (a 1940 house) with not much of a selection. Guitars hung high on the wall and stuff all over the floor, and not just guitars. It was actually hard to move around in there and there was no space to actually try anything. To top it off, when I did the dollar conversion on a couple of guitars I was familiar with, the price was identical to the big music store 5 minutes away from my house. I'd be surprised if I spent 10 minutes there. The electric room was a good size but I was so put off by that time I didn't bother. Not really my thing anyway.

GC is like many other retailers. They have better stores in larger markets and smaller stores in smaller markets. We have two in our area: the Sacramento store is much larger than the Roseville one. I haven't found anything truly special about their pricing, but they bring it to the masses, who'd prefer to play before they pay vs. buy online.
