My son Clay started out on a yard sale tenor guitar that I tuned to an open chord when he was 3, and let him wail away with his brother who had a mandolin banjo, also from a yard sale and also tuned to an open chord. When Clay was 7, he started taking lessons with the guitar tuned Chicago style, like a baritone uke. After about 2 months of lessons, he was switched to a Yamaha FG75. We still have the tenor guitar which has been converted to nylgut strings making it a baritone uke.
These photos were taken 37 years ago when I was a single parent living with twin three year olds. The ones of me and Clay were taken about 15 minutes before the one of me and Darcy, after I took a shower and shaved my beard. About a month later I met a lady who liked me with a beard and I never shaved it again. After the photos, Clay asked me to glue a pick guard on his guitar so it would "look like a Martin".

Gone are the days when the ukulele was just an instrument for comical value. It was common to think of the ukulele as an instrument only played by men in flamboyantly printed shirts in a tropical setting. ukulele store oahu
The first portable instrument in my parent's house (the non-portable one being the upright piano) was my father's cheap uke, on which he could play a few chords. I did my first chording on that uke before I started guitar lessons (and after my father passed away, I grabbed the uke from the closet where it was ensconced, and put it in my office, where it still resides.)
