I can't find the date stamp so I don't know exactly when it was made. This is the smaller 000 version of the dread H1260. I bought this on Shopgoodwill for cheap. It had some obvious issues, long crack in the side, the wrong bridge, high action, a few other cracks & dings, etc. When I finally got it I realized it is MUCH worse than the pictures showed!
There are far more dings, scrapes and cracks all over. The tuners are VERY tight! I had to use a tool to turn them to tune the guitar. The action is THE WORST I have ever seen!! A little over 1/4" low E & 15/64" B (the high E is missing), and that is tuned 2 steps down!! Oddly, the top is nearly flat (WITH string tension), only 1/16" belly behind the bridge and maybe 1/16" low around the soundhole. NOT what I expected with such high action. Looking inside the only thing I find I didn't like is the end of the screws and nuts that hold the bridge down. It is a light 3.60 lbs without strings. For comparison, my 1966 H162 is 3.99 lbs (same size), and my late 1960" H1260 is 4.31 lbs.
While tuning the guitar did open the side crack slightly, I can easily push it shut and it doesn't affect the action. The fretboard extension is not attached to the top and the neck is loose, it will rock up and down & side to side, but I can't get it to come apart. The neck jig will probably pop it, I won't have to use steam to take it off!!
The wrong bridge is .43" high with the saddle sticking out .11". The neck projects .17" off of the top. Yea, the neck angle is WAY OFF!!
This guitar is going to need some serious study before I do the neck reset. WHY is the neck angle off so far??!! And the side crack needs to be fixed first.
I was thinking when I first saw it, this could be the first guitar I convert to X bracing, whenever that is. I still have LOTS of vintage Yamaha FG work to do. But maybe I will just fix it for now. My only problem is I have so many guitar projects already, including 3 customer neck resets and maybe picking up another this weekend. I don't have time to work on my guitars. And that dang day job just gets in the way!!
The initial action, with the strings slacked. WOW!!
"Stuff" on the top. I don't even know what it is!!
The glue that held the pickguard.
Cracks.
That stuff.
The bass side crack.
The "floating" bridge!! Floating on a sea of glue!!
The tuners don't look bad, but they sure could use some lube!!
I'm guessing this guitar sat for a LONG TIME!! That's the broken high E string wrapped around the nut.
That action WITH string tension!! OVER 1/4"!!
The floating bridge again.
The fretboard extension is not attached to the top.
The neck is not attached to the guitar, but I can't get it off by wiggling. It will rock up and down & side to side, but it won't come off. I'll probably be able to press it off with the neck jig WITHOUT having to use steam!!
All I need is time...
