Consensus on string guage for Seagulls?

Cardinal2B , There's no right answer here I'm afraid.  It's really up to what you like best.

I can only give you this to think about, but it's still up to your preference.
The most typical gauge for Dreads and GAs seems to be light or medium.

Lights are more typical for guitars smaller than a GA (Grand Auditorium).

It also depends on what you want more.

Mediums will give you more volume, slightly more sustain, but are harder on your fingers and difficult to bend.

Lights will give you slightly less volume, but will be easier on your fingers and be easier to bend. 

Lights also have the added advantage of being much harder to snap because they "give" more.
I have busted medium strings at least a half dozen times in my life, but I have yet to snap a light gauge string even once.


If you're really not sure of anything, just buy cheap strings of different gauges and experiment and see what you like best or what works for you best.  You can get string packs for as cheap as 4 or 5 bucks at many places and even cheaper if you buy them in small lots.

For what it's worth, I use lights on all my guitars.  I'm mainly an aggressive strummer, but do my share of fingerstyle as well.  I really prefer lights, but again, that's my preference.  Putting less tension on the guitar and being virtually impossible to snap are huge to me.  And, lights put out more than enough volume, so I don't need more than they give.

I use 11-52 or 12-53 on my 6 strings, 10-47 on my 12's. Elixer Nanowebs or D'Addario EXP's.

I have a Seagull 6-string dread and a Seagull 12-string dread - 6-string currently has Elixer Phosphor Bronze 11 - 52, 12-string has D'Addario EXP 80/20 bronze 10-47 (I usually use phosphor bronze, but someone gave me these).
