What sort of guitar straps do people here use?

I don't have any guitar straps, never had one, but I only play sitting down.

I have one I bought, strictly for novelty, it's some sort of man made material and I got my initials embroidered in Old English letters in contrasting color- the strap is brown the letters are gold. I put it one guitar right after I got it,adjusted it, then took it off- I sit when I play-

I have straps for all of mine. None are very expensive, I don't think I have any pictures. But when I play out I always use a strap even when I sit on a stool.

I'm not real picky, I have a Levy one I like. I have a couple of the really cheep nylon ones, they all work. I had a really nice one with leather ends, but had a hard time getting it to fit good and tight enough to make me comfortable.

I do have top strap buttons on all my guitars, I don't care to tie on the head stock.

I also have strap locks on my Seagull, because I don't have a pick-up in it. If you are not using a pick-up the locks are really nice!

I always used straps on electrics unless I'm sitting. All the straps I used to get were the thin black leather with the sliding shoulder deal which was not padded just wide. Perhaps because they were the most common or inexpensive.


I ordered a cheap one only because it has real leather ends , states it's cotton yet looks more like that seat belt crap.

I've never had a strap come off or break. For me with parlor size acoustics even sitting they tend to tip away and a strap prevents this plus I like to stand at times and walk around. I don't leave them on acoustics I do on the electrics.

 It always seemed odd to me that most acoustics only have a button on the lower bout and one has to add one. I never tied a strap to a head stock and never would.

I usually stand to perform, but otherwise, at home or at a jam, I sit if a chair or stool is available. I don't use a strap for the guitar or banjo when I'm sitting, but for the mandolin or ukulele I do since they're too small to sit on my lap.

For the guitar and banjo, my head goes through the strap and it rests on my left shoulder. For a mandolin or ukulele, I hook the strap over my right shoulder (See my profile photo.)


Speaking of straps, Earl Scruggs always wore his banjo strap over his right shoulder when he played for Bill Monroe and with Flatt & Scruggs, but when he started playing with his sons in The Earl Scruggs Review, he put his head through the strap.  An interviewer asked himwhy he made the change and he said that when he was with Bill Monroe and with Flatt & Scruggs, he wore a hat, but stopped wearing a hat with the Scruggs Review.
