As y'all are aware, my guitar acquisition has turned into a journey of selective hoarding- TonyK said, in another thread, and I agree, that lookin for a particular sound is what drives some people to keep tradin, buyin, acquiring-
With that in mind- I've been lookin at dimensions (when I can find them) or just visually comparin when I can't find them, to give me a clue, or lead me in a direction to pursue- over all, I find myself liking the smaller (than dreadnought) body for aesthetics, and attributes (open slot head stocks) nut width and eye candy- as far as the eye candy goes, everyone has a different sweet tooth- correct?
But, the sound a guitar produces comes from the wood, the bracing and the size. Correct? I've noticed that the more depth a guitar has, the more volume it has- it seems the 4 inch is very common, with a variance of a slight plus or minus, some more than slight as in several 16ths of an inch-
I've referred to the Orangewood Ava in another thread as a stand in (kind of) for the Martin 00017 I want which is on hold (back order) for Lord only knows how long- it (the Ava) also has a Torreified Spruce top, and one of the reasons I want the Martin is because the it has a spruce top- the body depth on the Ava is 4 in according to their web site- it also has an attribute I want (open tuners) and look okay (according to the pictures) - my Martin 00015m is also 4 in body depth- and it has better volume that my Luna (Folk Body) which is 4 1/4 in depth-
So, all this rant nonsense is to say, yes, I'm lookin for a particular sound- but, aesthetics and attributes also play a role in the selection process- I'm reluctant to get the Ava but I don't know why- well, it is gettin crowded in my apt., but.... anyway, this also brings up, in my mind, picks vs thumb, again, for sound- so, I turned to dimensions as a tool to help make the decision of which direction to turn-
Man, this could turn into an essay and maybe a book of questions, feed back, personal opinion, etc.
Somethin (or someone) to keep in mind, is, Colter Wall- his style of playin really jumps out at me and I suppose is what I'm tryin to achieve, sonically at least- he doesn't use a pick- but, his guitar sounds incredible, to me- I've read he has an old Martin mahogany that looks to be comparable in size to me new one- but, he seems to get a spruce brightness/volume from it-
Is any of this makin sense? Or am I just talkin to hear my head rattle?
