As y'all may, or may not recall, I got 2 sets of La Bella silk and steel strings recently- I put one set on my Luna that I had on hand- and wow!, which is what convinced me to try them on somethin else- I put a set on the Red Rocket I got earlier in the week, and wow! The other set was burnin a hole in the plastic box I keep me strings in - I've been arguing with me self about which Lag to put them on- the T70A or the T118 A/E- well, I really like the Martin Monels on the T118 (the Black Lag) and it needed/wanted a new set of strings- it got Martin Monels I'm happy to say- and so is it. I could tell by the way it sang to me
I took a good look around inside it (the Black Lag) while changin strings- it has no back braces
I know that isn't uncommon, I was just surprised- keep in mind, at the lower bout it is only 3 1/4 inches deep- but, miced to the Fishman mini amp- meh- I didn't plug it in- I have before and wasn't impressed-
So, the T70A got the other set of La Bella's not impressed at all- inspectin the inside I found it has back braces, ladder style- it also is an auditorium body very similar in size to a 000 at 4 inches deep at the lower bout- and an epoxied hole in the bridge plate it appears the plate may have had a small chunk knocked out of it at a pin hole- so- epoxy- no more La Bella silk and steels on it- in fact, I had removed a set of Mangan Pb's I wasn't impressed with either- the first strings I put on it after I got it was Martin Monel- I liked them on it! Lesson learned....
Now, opening statement: Bridge Plate material. On all my guitars, the plate wood all looks the same- unfinished and natural color- and, splintery- - I've sanded around the pin holes on the ones that weren't smoothe because- I know unfinished doesn't transmit vibration as well as finished- it can't.
Question: Why, I'm wonderin, would learned builders/manufacturers use basically scrap to make as important a component as the bridge plate, which is where it all begins?
