Funny story:  Our summer place is just off the coast of Lubec, Maine, which is the easternmost point in the continental US.  Washington County, Maine, in which Lubec is located, is huge (3200 square miles) but very rural (only three traffic lights), economically depressed and "a bit" off the beaten path... but beautiful. Ya gotta kinda want to go there.

Locals and PFAs (People From Away, the summer folk like us) also have to kinda make our own party, so to speak, when it comes to entertainment. One of the really fun things we've run across is the University of Maine at Machias Ukelele Club band. This club is run by a somewhat wacky guy named Gene Nichols, a music professor at the school. Each gig they play may have from 5 to 30 people (all ages, shapes and sizes) playing mostly ukes but also a bass, drummer, and upright bass.  Their song book is about 8 inches thick, and has over 1400 tunes in it.  They ask the audience for requests, even to call out a random number, and they play it, and have a great time.

Gene, with his mop of blonde/almost-white hair, is usually dressed in bright yellow slacks, a Hawaiian shirt and yellow Converse sneakers.  In addition to the ukelele, he also plays the saw, various kazoos, pipes, and a baritone tuba/euphonium. He's a real character.

Now to the point of this tale:  Gene's main "axe" is an electric Stratocaster-esque ukelele in bright yellow. They played locally on the island here last Friday night and when I saw the yellow "Stratelele", I thought to myself, "There's Derick 's Fisher Price!".

petermac, That.......looks like a ton of fun!  A bunch of ukes sound really cool together.  Man, I'm jealous.  Wish I had a place like that to visit in the summers.  You lucky such-n-such!    Thanks for sharing that vid.
