Didn't use the Dove last night. Used the Guild 240D-- kind of cool though. It has everyone's signature on it ...
Which reminds me... Karla is having a charity silent auction March 4th for Caiden's Hope and has, currently 4 acoustic guitars for auction, signed by Texas artists... Shenendoah and Kin Faux, Mary Sarah and David Frizzell, and Flatland Calvary, and Kevin Fowler (who has played at Cork This Tap That) and Roger Creager... going to be an all afternoon deal!
We each got to do 4 songs... time between acts (with folks getting set up) ate up a lot of playing time, so 1 set each was all we got to play. It was a good night though!
We had 10 artist show up. John, Mike McNamara and I were the only regulars, so 7 acts, (but 10 people we're not accustomed to). There was a newbie (to playing in public), Rob Scott who drove for 1 1/2 hours to get there, from Livingston Tx. He is a lefty and had a Fender guitar w/o a pup so he had to mic up. He is a writer/singer who did good his first time out and said he will be back.
There were a couple of young guys who played together, sort of. They said last night was there first time to perform together, (on the same stage) ... they travel in the same crowd but hadn't played together. Both played Parlor Body guitars. One of which was a Jim Dandy , played upside down, left handed... the other was an Alvarez... they are experienced (as are most of the people who show up) and did a good job.
There were 2 women showed up, one I know who has been there a few times, Pam Grisham. The other was a lady named Mia Suzanne Walker who said she is a member of a band (I don't recall the name of) and she probably had a 45 minute drive to get there. She's good, and Pam is too, with local, regional (as in Texas) and even, to some degree, national fame. Both did/do covers and originals.
There was a man who I saw the first time, last Sunday, at a different venue, who played an American made Stratocoustic Fender... sounded pretty dadgum good, IMO I don't recall his name... I post them to face book, but remembering names isn't my strong suit... (yes I know it's an issue)... he says he has played with a band, all over Texas, for the last 40 years, but recently retired from his day job and decided to give solo a shot... he has recorded music and when I learn his name I will post a video... I like his style and sound.
The Texas Twisters where there again... but calling themselves a different name... IDR what it was, but they do country rock and the blues... this week they had an accordion player ... the bass player used an acoustic Ibanez Mahogany- plugged in of course, and it sounds good! They are good!
There was a young man from Austin (130 miles away), by the name of Carson Eric... he is a showman... high energy singer/writer.player- very entertaining!
Chris Madsen was there as well. He has teamed up with Shane Ludwig (who used to play open mic with us but has since branched out to paid gigs only). Chris usually does drums with Shane, but last night played a guitar and did a great job!
Had a full house of patrons and the crowd spilled over into outside... ... happy for Karla, who gave me my hugs as did Yvonne and Krista!
One of the customers who was at the bar asked the lady tending bar if he could meet me - wow!
How flattering is that? He and I chatted for several minutes- I had to cut it short as I have been christened our official photographer and poster to face book...
Hard to have bad week when Friday's are so good!
