Berner licensed the patent to Kyser in about 1985 or 1986. Meanwhile, Nichols sold the same patent to Jim Dunlop - without Berner's or Fernandez's consent.
Dunlop made the originals design's sharp edges smoother and rounder.
In order to avoid a patent fight, Kyser made a new design, retaining the same axial torsion spring design and they patented their new design.
