I find it hard to believe that after the LOOOOOOONG discussions about strings over on the old board, that no one started anything here. So I will...
Here's the question: what are your preferred "go-to" strings? You know, the brand that you always seem to come back to. Sure, we all like to try new strings and see if they make a difference in sound, but eventually you cycle back to your old favorite. So what is it, and why?
Personally, for me, that brand's probably the D'Addario EXP26 coated phosphor bronze in custom light gauge (.011-.052). To me, they sound excellent, with good definition, and they last a long time before I start feeling like I need to change them.
I've tried Elixirs (both nanoweb and polyweb, and I'm not a fan of the 'slick' feel that they have, and the Exilirs start to get 'fuzzy' and peeling around the soundhole fairly swiftly for me -- I'm a strummer far more than a fingerpicker, which may have something to do with that. The D'Addario coating doesn't do that as much.
I've also tried the Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze strings in Light gauge (which is the same as the D'Addario Custom Light), and honestly, I like them quite a bit. Definitely a stronger treble sound; in fact, at first they sound rather "chimey" to me (if I can coin a word) and almost too bright, but mellow out in a week or two. And that mix of metals seems to be resistant to the oils and acids coming from my hands; they last a good long while even if they're not a coated string. I still have a few packs of those around, and will almost certainly try them again.
Anyway, that's what I tend to use. Feel free to tell us why you agree or disagree! What strings do you use on your beloved acoustics, and why?
