Sorry I've missed this!!! I've been unbelievably busy the last couple of weeks!

I'd pick the 60's/70's vintage FG's every time!!! The modern FG-730S I had briefly was nothing like the vintage FG's. But you never know, there's always the one guitar that sounds better than other similar models.

My 1970 FG-110 is my favorite guitar lately. It's so light and responsive! It only weighs 3.5 lbs vs. nearly 5 lbs for modern guitars.

You HAVE TO HAVE a cedar top Seagull!! My 2004 Coastline Folk has been consistently one of my favorite guitars. It's similar to the FG-110, only a little warmer. Even with 3 year old Elixirs on it! I have to put new strings on the Maritime Folk and compare it to the Coastline Folk.

Not to knock Yamahas or anything, but I don't think there's a Yammy out there, (at similar price points anyways, even if the Yammy was a few hundred bucks more), that can touch a cedar topped Godin acoustic. Godin does some real magic with their cedar topped guitars.

I'll agree with the Yami's made in the last 35-40 years. The one's before that, you'd have an interesting comparison.

I am playing my Seagull much more since I started this topic. And you are right - it's a fantastic guitar. Beginning to love it more and more - for $200, what a purchase (albeit used!)

I've also pulled out my old CBS Masterworks MWG-550, and even w/extra light strings... That old MIJ laminate still has that boxy, folky sound. You never see those old CBS Fenders much - I know George Gruhn has called that era of "Fender" guitars it's worse. And probably so. But my CBS is one I'll hold onto. Something about it - not like a Gull or Yamaha... Something much different, which is why guitars are so much fun to have around the house!

The new scalloped bracing really deepens the tone. It rivals my old FG-150.
